Social media and propaganda - 11/24/19 03:15 PM

Quote:
In a speech last night at the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen attacked Facebook and other social media platforms for enabling the proliferation of hate speech and misinformation.

The speech was striking in its sincerity – Baron Cohen appeared as himself, rather than “in character” as one of his satirical personas – and its blistering tone.

Describing Facebook as “the greatest propaganda machine in history”, Baron Cohen argued that the company, which does not vet political ads for truthfulness, would have allowed Hitler to run propaganda on its platform.

Here is the full transcript, from his prepared remarks:

That may be true, but they are an equal rights propaganda machine. Lefties can post up all the lefty propaganda they want right alongside the ridiculous rightwing stuff.

I filter out all the right wing stuff just as the righties filter out all the left wing stuff.

The stark division between rather large groups of people in the U.S. is highly unnatural - as in not how interactive systems work in nature.

It is also completely contrived by smaller groups of "leaders" who think that they will derive some benefit for themselves by severely disrupting the systems of governance that keep humans more or less at peace with each other. Humans are the only creatures on earth that seem to need such controls, and we don't appear to be very good at it even during the best of times. The cultural forms of human governance (aside from the applied forms that we call politics) are ethics, honesty, and consideration.

The only way I see for us to avoid a civil war, or some other form of societal meltdown, is for each one of us to consciously make an effort to be more ethical, truthful, and considerate in our day-to-day lives.

Too late. The civil war is raging. Republicans have abdicated all responsibility to be ethical, truthful, or considerate.

Not really. A friend of mine who ventured into the Rant for a short time about a year ago has been running a lefty Facebook group for five years.
He's still a member, so I think I will urge him to stop by and fill in the rest of the story.
He goes by "Snarky Politics".

I've witnessed FB's double standard in real time for the last five years.
