First, Rahm is President Obama's top flunky. When he speaks in that role, it is assumed that he is speaking for the President. Secondly it as President Obama who mentioned Limbaugh by name :
 Quote:

“You can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,” he [President Obama] told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.

One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.

Third, Limbaugh said since the Dems wanted to portray him as the leader of the Republican party, the debate should be between himself and the leader of the Dems (president Obama), not one of the President's flunkies.

P.S.2 -- He is hardly a "private citizen."

What public elective office or government appointed position does he hold? ;\)

Different silly season, different silly circus.

We have had the pre-campaign circus, the campaign circus, the election circus, and we are now at the First 100 Days Circus. Ultimately, how many rings it has - and its corresponding entertainment value - will depend on the number of additional FUBARs by the White House; i. e., how many schwanzes are dropped in the dirt by the president and/or his staffers and the number of cleats and how hard they are stepped on.

But the delightful tensor is that the popcorn is always hot and fresh and in good supply.

How're you fixed for butter and salt?

You are right in that sense, he is a private citizen. I was thinking in the journalistic sense.

while certainly he is a citizen (although have there been shrieks calling for his birth cert i wonder?) private he most certainly is not in any sense of the word!

as a radio host, as a celebrity or as a paid backer of one side of the republicratic party. its a pretty far stretch of the imagination to call him a private citizen.

that is all

Black Jewel Popcorn, Pink Himalayan Salt, and Irish Butter for me please!
It promises to be immensely entertaining watching the Republican party continue to crumble.
 Quote:

Today, the Democratic Party controls both the Legislative and Executive Branches. President Obama, through masterfully delivered public addresses and carefully articulated policy initiatives, now dominates the high ground of American politics. Meanwhile, the GOP has been defending policies only popular within its base to hold what it still has, which marginalizes the party even further. The entire Republican Party, it seems, has spent the last week bending a knee to Rush Limbaugh, whose far-right grandstanding is leading the GOP even further into darkness.

Sooner or later the party will re-emerge, for that is the way of things in American politics. In the meantime, however ... hoo, boy, what a glorious mess this is. Source

Emma, I'd agree with the notion of him being a private citizen in that he does not hold an elected or appointed office in any level of government - that is, he is not a public official.

However, I agree with you he is most certainly a public figure and a very prominent one at that. In the journalistic sense, or the legal sense* a public figure has less protection from the libel/slander laws than a non-public figure.
