Congress approves $106 bln for wars, swine flu, IMF

Published: Thursday June 18, 2009

US lawmakers late Thursday sent President Barack Obama a 106-billion-dollar emergency bill to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, fight swine flu, aid Pakistan and boost IMF loans to poor nations.

The Senate voted 91-5 for compromise legislation that cleared the House of Representatives by a 226-202 margin on Tuesday.

I we can agree about a few things...

When Republicans said Obama would "cut and run"... they lied.

When Obama said he would not "cut and run" he told the truth.

And any candidate who did propose that he would "cut and run"...
he was not a candidate for long.

And as to whether the election alternatives were in fact co-equivalent.... McCain promised to stay in Iraq until "we won"... however long it takes. Obama said he would withdraw responsibly.... which appears to be what he is doing.

If you think the two positions are co-equivalent... I guess that is your opinion.... which seems not affected by any facts.

Indeed. Be ready, however, for the "Yeah, but" Chorus. Partisans will soon tell us how it's all OK and somehow it is the best that we can hope for, though damn few Democrats voted for more war, longer war and the continuation of the loss of civil liberties because "we are at war". (was that a run on sentence?)

We're getting a massive continuation of the "Republican" agenda. If it walks like a duck...

I don't know why people are surprised by this...much of it was pretty clear prior to the election.

My favorite rationalizations, so far, are the 11 dimensional chess theory and "but McCain would have been worse", which'll make an *awesome* campaign slogan for 2012.

Ardy, my good friend, I appreciate your position. I cannot, however, accept your position. We agree in that McCain was a bad choice. We disagree in that Obama was the only other choice. Time and time again the "either or option" has given America crap for choices. If I give you a choice between two turds why in the world would you accept either choice? America does, however, time and time again. Then they complain. Duh!

McCain was a bad choice, Obama was not a good one.

If you voted for Obama with the expectation that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would continue for years to come you are no doubt pleased with Obama. If you thought perhaps that the war would expand and include Pakistan you are perhaps very satisfied. I am not suggesting that you personally wanted any of the above.

Whatever you wanted we have war and more where that came from. We can leave Iraq and Afghanistan soon. We won't. We could have begun the demobilization of both countries long before now, we haven't. In fact we are escalating the war in Afghanistan and we aren't leaving Iraq anytime soon.

I never believed Obama would get us the hell out of either country in his first term. That is - one - of the reasons I did not vote for Obama, or McCain. When it all comes down there isn't that much difference between the two.

Hi Mickey,Hekate and Ardy!

"Who Was It" that wrote about "the tangled web we weave"? [I "sureashell" don't know!]

imo- President Obama "has landed" in "a world" of "tangled web".
[and "the spiders" are "damn sure" UPON "him"!]...

"YET"-HE STILL "SEEMS INTERESTED" IN "DOING HIS JOB".

I,"for one" will wait "to see" WWOD once he receives "the bill".
