So who are they/we? This is an excerpt from an email I received yesterday claiming to be in support of healthcare reform, just not this healthcare reform. It recommends calling your congressman and requesting they vote against the current legislation, not much doubt in my mind this has Republican Origins:

 Quote:
(3) Who are the 47.5 Million Uninsured being discussed?

(a) 11.0 Million are currently Eligible for Medicaid/SCHIP (Government funded plans), but simply are not enrolled! Both the Government and these individuals themselves are at fault for not getting them enrolled in coverage already available to them!

(b) 9.7 Million are not United States Citizens. These are legal immigrants who have not been required to provide proof of healthcare coverage prior to entry into the U.S., something many foreign countries require in order for foreigners to enter their country on a student or work visa. Why doesn’t the U.S. have such a requirement?

(c) 4.7 Million are College & University Students. Most of these students have basic care provided at school clinics with the cost covered by student fees. However, this still leaves them vulnerable for the costs of diagnostic tests and hospital care, if required.

(d) 9.1 Million are Individuals with annual household incomes in excess of $75,000 who can afford the cost of health insurance but still don’t have it.

Our friend Ma_Republican posted these as the correct figures yesterday:

 Quote:
12,000,000 to 20,000,000 are illegal aliens. American law should not even consider the health of people who are in the country illegally.

another 12 to 20,000,000 are healthy young professionals who do not feel they need health insurance. It is a gamble on their part, but they are taking it.

Then there is a percentage who is eligible for Medicare but choose not to pay the enrollment fee.

Is this number a fabrication? Does anyone know the real breakdown, or is it just an arbitrary number being bandied about for political purposes? Could the number actually be much higher since the economic downturn?

Somewhere is a number that includes all of the people who cannot afford health insurance. Anyone who runs a small business out of their home, anyone who works for minimum wage or less, anyone who has been laid off, anyone who does manual labor in small business like car repair... none of these can afford health insurance. Who is counting them?

I heard on one of the news shows last night that 1 in 4 people in Texas are uninsured. The story was about their governor, health care and the 10th amendment. (sorry, don't have a link)

Austin, if that figure is right, I can understand why you're so pi$$ed off. \:\(

Ahh.. I did find a link: Link ("Might make a good thread in the Constitution forum", Sky muttered to himself.)

Demographics of the uninsured, Gallup, 7/22/09
 Quote:
Bottom Line

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index finds that while a large majority of Americans have health insurance, one in six in this country is without coverage. The current percentage of uninsured Americans (16.0%) represents a small, but measurable increase over last year. Hispanic Americans, at a rate approaching triple the national average, are the most likely subset of the population to be uninsured. Those making less than $36,000 per year are the second-most-likely group to be uninsured, with 18- to 29-year-olds following closely behind.

From a Census bureau report in 2000 the figure was 42 million.

And this is an admittedly biased report, but gives sources: National Coalition on Health Care

Apart from the obvious political charge about immigrants, I cannot see why they should not be included in any legislation. I can see a point to not providing subsidy for such care, but if they are not included, we will bear the cost any way in some form.

(Phils above link is good)

By the way, the fact the younger adults are often not insured is a statistic that cuts both ways....

Yes, younger adults are less likely to need medical care. But some fraction of them WILL need medical care. How will they get it? Who will pay for it? Does society really have the choice to watch them die if a situation arises where they do need medical care? Is it the case that these young and healthy people are uninsured... or are they backstopped by society at large who will somehow come in and rescue them if need be? Should these people really have the choice not to have health insurance?

Also, suppose that everyone pays the actual cost of insurance in their circumstance. The result is that young healthy people will have very low rates. And old and sick people will have unfordable rates. So we are defining a system where people who mostly do not =need medical care will most be able to afford it... and still will not pay. While anyone who really needs insurance will suddenly become a bad risk and will not be able to pay. What sort of insurance is that? It is like offering people the chance to insure their house when they hear that a hurricane is coming.

Emma...
they don't count... do they. After all, these people are simply bearing the burden of their freely chosen lifestyle decisions.

This is my group. People who get dirty when they work, people with scars and calluses, people who wear out more than just the seat of their pants. My people, my people! When it rains we get wet. When it's hot we sweat. No paid vacations, holidays or sick days. No benefits, no retirement and no insurance.

this is me too although I do pay (a lot!) for small catastrophic insurance policy that I've never been able to file claim on.

this is me too.
Insurance coverage was affordable when I freely chose my lifestyle 20 years ago though.

And NOWHERE do the figures list the people who HAVE insurance but are still NOT RECEIVING CARE.
These are the people who pay and pay, and when it comes time to make a claim, they're denied!

Which box do these people fit into?
