Welcome to the Round Table for Sunday, Sept 27One of my favorite "autumn" songs to start us off... 1722 Samuel Adams revolutionary rabble rouser/(Lt Gov-Mass, 1789-94) We cannot make events. Our business is wisely to improve them. He who is void of virtuous attachments in private life is, or very soon will be, void of all regard for his country. There is seldom an instance of a man guilty of betraying his country, who had not before lost the feeling of moral obligations in his private connections. 1792 George Cruikshank England, illustrator for Charles Dickens 1817 Hiram R Revels Fayetteville NC, 1st black US senator 1840 Thomas Nast political cartoonist of late 1800s America (Protesting paper money) 1858 Giuseppe Peano Italian mathematician, founder of symbolic logic 1896 Sam Ervin (D-Sen-NC), Watergate committee chairman 1917 Louis Auchincloss Lawrence NY, lawyer/novelist (Watchfires) 1922 Arthur Penn Phila, director (Miracle Worker, Bonnie & Clyde) Eight minutes of film that seems like a documentary too private to watch. 1934 Greg Morris Cleveland Ohio, actor (Mission Impossible, Vega$) 1934 Wilford Brimley Salt Lake City Utah, actor (Gus-Our House, Cocoon) Most likely to be remembered for his ads about diabetes treatment. If he educated some people, I don't really care how he pronounced it. 1943 Randy Bachman Winnipeg, rocker (Bachman-Turner Overdrive-Roll On) 1947 Cheryl Tiegs Minnesota, model 1947 Liz Torres Bronx NY, actress (Phyllis, All in the Family) 1947 Meatloaf aka Marvin Lee Aday, Dallas, rocker (Bat Out of Hell) I was always surprised this guy survived... 1958 Shaun Cassidy LA Calif, actor/singer (Hardy Boys, Breaking Away) Deaths which occurred on September 27: 1660 St Vincent de Paul Vincentian Cong founder, dies (And you thought he was just a Society!) 1870 Henry TP Comstock Canadian silver prospector, dies at 50 1956 Mildred "Babe" Didrickson Zaharias great female athlete, dies Babe was thought to be the inspiration for the Hepburn-Tracy movie "Pat and Mike," and appeared as herself in that movie. She was an outstanding athlete in golf, basketball, and track and field. 1981 Robert Montgomery actor/dir (Robert Montgomery Presents), dies at 77 An Englishman and a Scotsman are driving head on, at night, on a twisty, dark road.
Both are driving too fast for the conditions and they collide on a sharp bend in the road. To the amazement of both, they are unscathed, though their cars are both destroyed.
In celebration of their luck, both agree to put aside their dislike for the other from that moment on. At this point, the Scotsman goes to the boot and fetches a 12 year old bottle of whiskey. He hands the bottle to the Englishman, who exclaims, "May the Scots and the English live together forever, in peace, and harmony." The Englishman then tips the bottle and gulps half of the bottle down.
Still flabbergasted over the whole thing, he goes to hand the bottle to the Scotsman, who replies: "No thanks, I'll just wait till the police get here!"

1977 – The 300 metre tall CKVR-TV transmission tower in Barrie, Ontario, Canada is hit by a light aircraft in a fog, causing it to collapse.
1997 – Communications are suddenly lost with the Mars Pathfinder space probe. COINCIDENCE? I think NOT! "Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do."
"You can't help those who simply will not be helped. One problem that we've had, even in the best of times, is people who are sleeping on the grates, the homeless who are homeless, you might say, by choice." From the Church of Ineffable Stupidity: a) "Facts are Stupid Things" The New and Improved Birther Motto, first created by Ronald Reagan, and since then, adopted by Michele Bachmann and her mentally challenged twin sister, Sarah Palin, it applies perfectly to those in the GOP who chant, "Keep the Government away from my Medicare!" and its latest counterpart, "Keep Washington out of our FEMA." Birther sign makers have been busy, what with, "English is are Natonal Langauge!" and "NO PUBIC OPTION!" Seriesly, who can argue with that? - - - b) "What does an actor know about politics?" Indeed. - - - c) "We are trying to get unemployment to go up, and I think we're going to succeed." John Boehner opposed any stimulus package, mainly because it might help the unemployed. Given his love for all things Reagan, it was of no surprise when he put the American worker last, in terms of who he wants to help. You have to give Boehner a star consistency. On health care, his troops have done everything to deny, delay and derail any agreement on reforming our ailing health care cystern. Now that congressional democrats seem to have found a spine, possibly for the first time in their political careers, Boehner has a new idea: "Do they accept the defeat or do they hit the reset button and scrap all these big government ideas and work with Republicans to make our current system work better." That's right. After refusing to work with Democrats for the last four months, he wants to start from scratch. John, as your second favorite president said, "Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, you can't get fooled again!" - - - d) "All the waste in a year from a nuclear power plant can be stored under a desk." It takes a republican to really understand pollution, and exposure to dangerous materials. Take Senatwhore Vitter. Please. Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) is blocking an EPA nomination because he wants the agency to delay establishing safety procedures for formaldehyde. Meanwhile, major emitters of the dangerous chemical have been generous contributors to the senator's reelection campaign. . . .
Formaldehyde has been classified as a probable human carcinogen by the EPA, and has been linked to nasal, lung, and brain cancer, as well as leukemia. EPA says it's been studying the issue since 1997, and it's now time to issue a risk assessment and establish safety standards. . . .
But Vitter's stance on the issue is identical to that taken by the Formaldehyde Council Inc. (FCI), a trade group of formaldehyde producers. The group told TPMmuckraker in a statement that "an NAS review of formaldehyde has been a long-standing policy goal of the industry," and added that "FCI believes that the scientific evidence overwhelmingly shows that formaldehyde and formaldehyde-derived products are safe when used appropriately." - - -

Wow, visually fantastic. I always love your layouts, Mellow. Autumn in New York reminds me of my many times through there and once or twice stopping. I love Meat Loaf. I love the cat photo. And the English/Scot joke.
Where is everybody?
There is an unidentified object up in the sky. It's bright and shinny. Making the cool crisp air perfect. This is the time of year everybody likes to come south.
Morning all Olyve

A brilliant opener, Julia! The layout as always is stunning and the content shows that you can make lemonade when you're given lemons. Some days nothing really of interest happened. When you dig into the obits to find someone interesting enough to talk about you know that you've struck the bottom. Mondays opener is about the same and I will try to do as well as you have.........

A delicious breakfast and wonderful Autumn song, Julia.
It's not autumn in north Florida yet, but I hear it's cooling off in Omaha. We might have night temps in the mid-50s this week, but days will still be in the 80s -- tomorrow forecast to be 93!
Not scared, Ag. Just crazy busy. I've been up since early hours finishing a paper and now have a bunch of reading to do for class tomorrow night.
Hope everyone has a great Sunday!

You can still comfortably swim up until mid-October here in the Florida Panhandle. You know it's not summer, and it's not the same in an eerie feeling sort of way. Summer '09 is barely kaputsky and I'm already feeling nostalgic. Another summer bye-bye. The trees are turning from their spring green to a more yellowish tinged green. Along those lines as summer becomes autumn Chad & Jeremy's "A Summer Song" eases the transition for me. If I remember correctly, it's apple picking and fresh cider time in southern New England. I've always enjoyed a cinnamon doughnut with my cider. It wasn't too long ago that you could still get fresh unpasteurized cider.

Howdy, everyone! You would never know that Summer has passed, here in SoCal. It's been very hot, and it doesn't look like the heat will be gone for at least a few more days. We can swim her al most year round, and go to the beach too. BBQs are still going strong, and the backyard parties aeound here are still plentiful. Mellow~ Nice job on the intro. Breakfast looks yummy!
