Martin Luther King Day is a good day to celebrate Ebony and Ivory accomplishments. Not Paul and Stevie but Art Tatum on Piano and Buddy DeFranco on the Clarinet.

On January 11th...

1803 - Thomas Jefferson, in secret communication with Congress, sought authorization for the first official exploration by the U.S. government.

1778 - English navigator Captain James Cook discovered the Hawaiian Islands, which he called the "Sandwich Islands."

1788 - The first English settlers arrived in Australia's Botany Bay to establish a penal colony. The group moved north eight days later and settled at Port Jackson.

1871 - Wilhelm, King of Prussia from 1861, was proclaimed the first German Emperor.

1896 - The x-ray machine was exhibited for the first time.

1911 - For the first time an aircraft landed on a ship. Pilot Eugene B. Ely flew onto the deck of the USS Pennsylvania in San Francisco harbor.

1939 - Louis Armstrong and his orchestra recorded "Jeepers Creepers." Originally from a movie in which Louis Armstrong played the trainer of a racehorse named "Jeepers Creepers"
Here is an updated version of the song from 1958...

1943 - U.S. commercial bakers stopped selling sliced bread. Only whole loaves were sold during the ban until the end of World War II. (?????)

1948 - "The Original Amateur Hour" debuted. The show was on the air for 22 years.

1950 - The federal tax on oleomargarine was repealed.(?????)

1957 - The first, non-stop, around-the-world, jet flight came to an end at Riverside, CA. The plane was refueled in mid-flight by huge aerial tankers.

1958 - Willie O'Ree made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins. He was the first black player to enter the league.

1967 - Albert DeSalvo, who claimed to be the "Boston Strangler," was convicted in Cambridge, MA, of armed robbery, assault and sex offenses. He was sentenced to life in prison. Desalvo was killed in 1973 by a fellow inmate.

1975 - "The Jeffersons" debuted on CBS-TV.

1978 - The European Court of Human Rights cleared the British government of torture but found it guilty of inhuman and degrading treatment of prisoners in Northern Ireland.

1985 - Mary Decker broke a world, indoor record when she ran the women’s, 2,000-meter race in 5:34.2. She also ran the outdoor mile in 4:16.7.

1990 - In an FBI sting, Washington, DC, Mayor Marion Barry was arrested for drug possession. He was later convicted of a misdemeanor.

1991 - Eastern Airlines shut down after 62 years in business due to financial problems.

1993 - The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday was observed in all 50 U.S. states for the first time.

1995 - A network of caves were discovered near the town of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc in southern France. The caves contained paintings and engravings that were 17,000 to 20,000 years old.

A few interesting Birthdays today...

Peter Mark Roget 1779
Of Thesaurus fame, but also the inventor of the slide rule.

Daniel Webster 1782

No, not the one of dictionary fame. This is the Daniel Webster of oratorical fame. Three time presidential candidate, 14th Secretary of State, 19th Secretary of State, Massachusetts Senator, Massachusetts Member of the US House of Representatives and New Hampshire Member of the US house of Representatives. Webster fought unsuccessfully to prevent the Civil War:
Quote:
Secession! Peaceable secession! Sir, your eyes and mine are never destined to see that miracle. The dismemberment of this vast country without convulsion! ... There can be no such thing as a peaceable secession. Peaceable secession is an utter impossibility...We could not separate the states by any such line if we were to draw it...
Daniel Webster (March 7, 1850 A Plea for Harmony and Peace)

A.A. Milne 1882

Oliver Hardy
(Laurel & Hardy) 1892

Cary Grant 1904

Cary Grant was Hollywood's favourite romantic leading man for over 30 years, he was just as suave in his sixties as he had been in his thirties. He was also probably the finest light comedian ever, his unpretensious acting style wasn't flashy at all and he never won an a regular acting Oscar but Grant was a unique personality with many imitators but no equals

Danny Kaye 1913

Bobby Goldsboro 1941

The sixties were a special time. The music, the clothes...

David Ruffin (The Temptations) 1941

'Legs' Larry Smith (The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band) 1944
Gets an Honourable Mention for most interesting band name.

Kevin Costner 1955

Something to make you laugh

And something to make you think

Have a Great Week!

Great stuff, Greger! Love that wooden spoon prank!

My son John is in Chicago for a couple of months as an adjunct photography professor at Benedictine University. Yesterday, he attended Mass at Saint Sabina Church and heard the sermon by Reverend Samuel "Billy" Kyles, who was standing next to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., when he was assassinated. The sermon is about a half hour and is quite amazing.

Rev. Billy Kyles

Hope everyone has a great day.

I watched the "I have a Dream" speech. That one never gets old to me. The best part is
Quote:
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

It is truly a bittersweet time that we have our very first African-American president, but we are still judged by the color of our skins in the 21st century.

Quote:
"The world's most expensive ham" has gone on sale in London, according to retailer Selfridges.

The leg of Iberico ham, which costs £1,800, went on sale at the food hall in the retailer's flagship store in Oxford Street, central London.

The 7kg (15lb) ham leg comes with its own DNA certificate as proof of authenticity.

too little, too late

And--FYI and explaining absences--I'm coughing again. Started last Thursday. But I am capable of learning from the past and have an appoinment with a lung doctor Wednesday afternoon.

Am I scared? Hell, yes. Which I hope means it's really nothing to worry about.

1639 - Irish Bishop Ussher established the time and date of the creation as the night preceding 23 October 4004 BC, 10 years after an identical estimate of Irish Dr. John Lightfoot.

COINCIDENCE? I think NOT!

"They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you'll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal."

FROM THE CHURCH OF INEFFABLE STUPIDITY:

. - a) Pennsylvania criminals vie for coveted Ineffably Stupid Award
The highly prized Ineffably Stupid Criminal State had a new entry, and what a doozie it was.

Police say a Pennsylvania man in a hospital gown stole $50 from his ex-girlfriend at Wal-Mart, then tried to flee on a store-owned motorized shopping scooter. Thirty-two-year-old Craig David Jr., of Smithfield, was charged Wednesday with robbery and disorderly conduct.

State police Cpl. Chuck Frey says David had just been released from a hospital for injuries in a domestic dispute Jan. 1st. Frey says David had been hit with a frying pan and table leg.

David was still in a hospital gown Tuesday night when he met an ex-girlfriend who agreed to pay for his prescription medication. Instead, police say he grabbed $50 from her and scooted away.

Read more: http://www.sfgate.com/...

His girl hospitalizes him with a frying pan, and he responds by taking $50 from her, then making his daring escape to a life of luxury on a WalMart scooter? Oh, the Life of Riley.

- . . . b) Florida regains lead in Ineffably Stupid Award contest

TAVARES — Lake County authorities say they have a serial car burglar in custody, one who shocked himself with a Taser and put himself in handcuffs.

Shane Thomas Williams-Allen of Orlando was arrested this week on multiple burglary and grand-theft counts, and the Lake County Sheriff's Office said he may be linked to as many as nine car burglaries around Clermont and Minneola.

And one of the burglaries involved an unmarked Ocoee Police car, the Sheriff's Office said. Stolen from that car were a Taser, an expandable baton, handcuffs, a Glock handgun magazine, a digital camera and a digital recorder.

Williams-Allen, 19, discharged the stolen Taser and shocked himself when he first discovered it, the investigation found.

Last week, he accidentally locked himself up with the handcuffs and had to call authorities to set him free, according to his arrest report. Many of the other stolen items were recovered following his arrest.

Florida's Leading Bid

- . - . c) Cardiac Woes
The Bears newest addition, starting DE Gaines Adams (26), died of an enlarged heart. The Bears' defense coaches were proud of his commitment to exceed his performance next season. He promised to anything and everything he could to fit the expectations he earned as a first round draft choice for Tampa Bay in 2007.

In unrelated news, Steroid linked to Enlarged Heart: "On occasion , the long-term, heavy steroid user may develop cardia hypertrophy. This enlarged condition of the heart can be very dangerous. This effect is diagnosed by a chest x-ray or ultrasound. Enlargement of the heart is very rare, but has been associated with the long term use of high doses of AAS."
http://www.ironlife.com/...

Twenty six years, a promising career, and an end, all too soon. No one knows whether he used any artificial enhancements to earn that first round draft position. No one really knows what the Bears coaches had in mind when he promised to "do everything and anything" to earn a starting position. All we know is that today's sports industry has even more to answer for today.

- . . d) Rural Texas Rapist

Pepper spray has been flying off the shelves in the towns where the attacks have occurred, and McGinty said her landlord in Marquez handed out stun guns as Christmas gifts. Nearly 200 miles away in Yoakum, elderly volunteers at the local museum have been locking its doors during business hours. . . .

Beginning with the rape of a 65-year-old woman in Yoakum last January, authorities have linked eight sexual assaults or attempted sexual assaults to the suspect, who has been dubbed the "Twilight Rapist" because most of the attacks occurred around dawn. They also believe he robbed or attempted to rob four other women.

The victims have all been women, ranging in age from 65 to 91. One rape victim played piano at her church on Sundays. An 81-year-old woman scared off an intruder with a gun, firing several rounds for good measure. A 66-year-old woman was attacked twice, despite having moved across town following the first assault.

Pastor Ag has been against the death penalty, ever since Illinois' brush with putting 17 innocents to death. He is, in this case, willing to make an exception.

. e) Green Bay Packers
"We need new blood in order to win in this league."
--- Green Bay coaches

"Pfui."
---- Brett Favre.

. . - . f) BPA and the FDA

In 2008, the FDA found that the plastic additive BPA was safe for all use, even while other countries were banning its use. Last year, the new and improved FDA reviewed its prior decision, in the face of far more serious scientists and their confirmed findings. Most recently, the FDA says that BPA may be excluded (by statute) from the FDA's power, a great example of how money corrupts science in this country.

In a non-scientific "Early Show" experiment, Wallace ate a sandwich made from canned tuna, which consumer groups have found to contain BPA. Shortly afterwards, she had her blood drawn. For the next two days, Wallace tried to live a BPA-free life, during which she tried to avoid all foods in cans or plastic containers.

Then she had her blood drawn again. Her serum samples were shipped to the lab of University of Missouri professor Fred Vom Saal.

Vom Saal told Wallace, "The first set of blood that you gave us had high levels of Bisphenol A in it. It's over five times higher than what we find on average in women in the United States."

However, after her BPA-free diet, Vom Saal said her levels were much lower than average.

Wallace asked, "How convinced are you that elevated levels of BPA in people's bodies can lead to cancers, heart disease, obesity and early puberty?"

He replied, "I and other colleagues of mine at an NIH (National Institutes of Health) meeting said, with a very high level of confidence, we think Bisphenol A is a threat to human health."

Bisphenol A - the silent killer

Honey and I have dropped the use of bottles of water (we rarely, if ever, drink soft drinks) from our lives. Instead, we reuse nice glass bottles that we simply clean, refill, and reuse as needed. As for canned food. Hmmm.

- - . g) Sarah Palin

She must be climbing walls at the moment. Her moment of gory in the Faux Sun was a fizzle. (a commentator who is the topic of others' commentary? Give me an effing break) Rush and Pat Robertson did far more to stay in the news, and even George W. got some good press.

With an ego like hers, this is simply intolerable. Watch for her to concoct some new, bizarre, strange PR event, all the while as she claims that it was not a PR event.

h) Moron Religious texts on gun sights?

Coded references to New Testament Bible passages about Jesus Christ are inscribed on high-powered rifle sights provided to the United States military by a Michigan company, an ABC News investigation has found.

The sights are used by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and in the training of Iraqi and Afghan soldiers. The maker of the sights, Trijicon, has a $660 million multi-year contract to provide up to 800,000 sights to the Marine Corps, and additional contracts to provide sights to the U.S. Army.

U.S. military rules specifically prohibit the proselytizing of any religion in Iraq or Afghanistan and were drawn up in order to prevent criticism that the U.S. was embarked on a religious "Crusade" in its war against al Qaeda and Iraqi insurgents.

One of the citations on the gun sights, 2COR4:6, is an apparent reference to Second Corinthians 4:6 of the New Testament, which reads: "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

Other references include citations from the books of Revelation, Matthew and John dealing with Jesus as "the light of the world." John 8:12, referred to on the gun sights as JN8:12, reads, "Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Time to demand that Trijicon's contract is cancelled; that Trijicon is fined; that Trijicon is banned from future US contracts, and that the assholes who made the decision to push their views upon others receive the full text they cite laser tattooed to their foreheads.
