Fox News' Lies Keep Them Out of Canada

Fox News' Lies Keep Them Out of Canada s America's middle class battles for its survival on the Wisconsin barricades - against various Koch Oil surrogates and the corporate toadies at Fox News - fans of enlightenment, democracy and justice can take comfort from a significant victory north of the Wisconsin border. Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canadian regulators announced last week they would reject efforts by Canada's right-wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news. Canada's Radio Act requires that "a licenser may not broadcast ... any false or misleading news." The provision has kept Fox News and right-wing talk radio out of Canada and helped make Canada a model for liberal democracy and freedom. As a result of that law, Canadians enjoy high quality news coverage, including the kind of foreign affairs and investigative journalism that flourished in this country before Ronald Reagan abolished the "Fairness Doctrine" in 1987. Political dialogue in Canada is marked by civility, modesty, honesty, collegiality, and idealism that have pretty much disappeared on the US airwaves. When Stephen Harper moved to abolish the anti-lying provision of the Radio Act, Canadians rose up to oppose him fearing that their tradition of honest non-partisan news would be replaced by the toxic, overtly partisan, biased and dishonest news coverage familiar to American citizens who listen to Fox News and talk radio. Harper's proposal was timed to facilitate the launch of a new right-wing network, "Sun TV News" which Canadians call "Fox News North." What kind of modern civilized country would pass a law that denies news organizations the right to lie?

You said it : a modern, civilized country !! There is plenty of lying in Canadian media -- after all, they get news reports from the USA!! But Canadians are not as tolerant of it as are the mentally befogged inhabitants of the Brainwashed States of America.

...There is plenty of lying in Canadian media ... ...but, it's against the law. Well Numen did write, There is plenty of lying in Canadian media -- after all, they get news reports from the USA!! But Canadians are not as tolerant of it as are the mentally befogged inhabitants of the Brainwashed States of America. So he seems to be pointing a line at secondhand lies whre some talking head just repeats the lie another talking head in the U.S. of A. said. Canada, unlike the U.S. of A. does seem to have some kind of limiter on the the bull they allow their media to spew.

' Obviously, you cannot control all lies.
But you can control the George W. Bush and Goebbel-esque BIG LIES that are provably false, but are repeated so often that the ignorant masses just assume them to be true.

If American Media just fills their news with lies, then why does Canada repeat it? Doesn't Canadian Media research their news stories(especially those from the USA) before printing or showing them on TV? Especially if the y supposedly know that the US-reported news is full of alleged lies? What kind of honesty and civility is that? Sounds more like lazy stupidity to me.

Then there's the obvious corollary.......That the content of Fox News doesn't correspond with the lies of Canada's state media ! What else to expect from a government that is retroactively seizing legally purchased firearms because it "made a mistake"; without offering any compensation to its citizens ? One wonders if it would do the same if the subject machinery were motor vehicles ! >Mech
