Writing Off The Elderly

After all, what have they done for us lately?

Quote:
What we have witnessed in the 21st century is a clear decision by political elites and the private interests that control them that gratuitous wars are more important than the elderly. In the budget deliberations it is not the trillion dollar annual budgets of the military/security complex that are seen as excessive. Instead, the focus is on cutting the sparse benefits for the elderly....
It is not difficult to imagine the US government assigning a specified number of retirement years to citizens, and then you take a pill. The declining respect for life is also indicated by the fact that there is no move to impeach Obama for drawing up lists of people, including US citizens, to be executed without due process and by the fact that few Americans even blink an eye at the murder by their government of hundreds of thousands of Muslims in the name of a hoax "war on terror." With society's resources shrinking, the demonization of Social Security endangers the elderly.

So is this about benefits to the elderly or is it about bashing Obama? The author may rest assured that Republicans, if they thought there was any chance of it sticking, would certainly impeach President Obama.
As things stand he has reduced the killing and is making plans to end the conflict in Afghanistan in two years.

Well, yes, yes it is pretty difficult to imagine all that occurring unless you've got a bit of an overactive imagination(and I shall name no names here) and enjoy looking at things in their worst possible light.
let's decide which of the two subjects broached will be the topic of discussion here before we move forward, please....

The subject of the thread is quite obvious : "Writing Off the Elderly" -- that is the title of the article !

It is well known that government bean-counters are irritated that people are living longer -- it costs them money !

Americans don't like to discuss this fact. The British, not being so addicted to American hebephrenic optimism, handle these things better.

There is an interesting BBC series on government (sort of a "Yes, Prime Minister" with more realism and less humour) called "The Final Cut," starring a perfectly cast Ian Richardson as the irrepressibly wicked Chief Executive.

The beginning sections of the first episode deal with the problem of the elderly quite frankly and quite clearly -- insofar as these matters can be dealt with in the media.

I think the author may himself be in the throes of dementia, so rambling and illogical was the construction of his piece. I agree that there are societal problems in balancing defense and lifetime care, but once again we are treated to a fine exemplar of arguing from the conclusion. There were valid points to be made, but one has to dig through too much fluff and hyperbole to find them.

It is interesting, numan, that in a piece primarily about neocons, and other conservative policy pushers, you pick the one paragraph that mentions Obama (as an aside), and elide the core of the article to do so. It was not the author, but the editor, who confused the subject matter.

The underlying premise of Social Security was that the nation as a whole could provide some support for the elderly, one of the most traditional of community values. It recognized that the industrial world had run roughshod over families and the systems of support once present, imperfect as they were.

Yes, and there was a political and even a cynical side to the design of the system and it has always been a thorn in the side of some conservatives.

I am struck by the willingness of the party of "family values" to attack this or virtually any program that provides what pre-industrial families tried to provide and then raise the bar to make life better for all.

It is not family values they protect but prejudice, property and power. Just like Christ taught.

Phil~Don't blame Christ for what the Extreme Christian Right chooses to bastardize. Christ would be appalled at all of our politicians and most of the people(who claim to be Christian) for our selfish and mean-hearted attitudes. He would say that he did not know us. And he would be right.

Yes, which is my point. Thankfully there are those, such as yourself, who are followers of Christ, not merely Christians.

Ah, American optimism !! How many disasters does it engender.

The author, whom you think demented, was an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and an editor of the Wall Street Journal (before it fell into the clutches of Rupert Murdoch). He is a pretty smart cookie -- perhaps even smarter than anyone posting on Capitol Hill Blue.

Concentration camps need not be opened for the elderly -- benign neglect can work wonders !!
And when you give a free rein to Big Pharma -- well, the problem is practically solved !!

Don't trust doctors and their drugs -- not without careful research -- and stay out of hospitals! They are real killers! All that cold air is great for encouraging pneumonia!! And avoid Ensure and similar food substitutes!! They just encourage the Clostridium difficile that hospitals are so well designed to give you!

---In my humble opinion, of course!

If there are such things as government bean counters they haven't been doing a very good job keeping track of the government's beans. We have pork in every bill that passes congress; bridges to nowhere, and...

Social Security is funded well into the future, as long as the bean counters don't take my social security beans and spend them on new weapons systems that will be obsolete even before they go over budget. Government bean counters need to concern themselves far less with how long people live(if indeed they are concerned) and more with pissing away what beans government really has to piss away with out growing more beans.
