600-year-old linen bras found in Austrian castle
VIENNA (AP) — A revolutionary discovery is rewriting the history of underwear: Some 600 years ago, women wore bras.

The University of Innsbruck said Wednesday that archeologists found four linen bras dating from the Middle Ages in an Austrian castle. Fashion experts describe the find as surprising because the bra had commonly been thought to be only little more than 100 years old as women abandoned the tight corset.

Instead, it appears the bra came first, followed by the corset, followed by the reinvented bra.

One specimen in particular "looks exactly like a (modern) brassiere," says Hilary Davidson, fashion curator for the London Museum. "These are amazing finds."

So, for at least 600 years, guys have been pretending to yawn wo they could try and take these things off.

The Austrian School, once again, proves its worth.

LOL. Ahem. But, the important question appears unanswered in the articles: what was the cup size. Enquiring minds want to know.

Actually, speaking as somewhat of an expert on this subject, cup size nomenclature was still in its infancy at the time, and did not follow our current alphabetical system, which attempts to convey a physical image through a multi-step intellectually abstract conversion process.

Back in the day, cup size was more of a direct volumetric reference, and included the half-pint, pint, quart, half-gallon, and (rarely) the gallon. The cup was thought to be hardly worth mentioning. Hmm

(Note the etymology of the word gal-lon)

"(Note the etymology of the word gal-lon) "

There is some disagreement due to the similarity of the word galleon. One must take into consideration that gallon and galleon are similar, just as cup-size and cap-size are similar. Just as most men were not interested in the cup-size, preferring something a bit larger, so too were the owners of galleons not particularly interested in cap-size.

I suspicion that some boobs may already be amongst the cups this fine morning?

A half pint being a cup leads me to believe that the volume of the original "A cup" may well have been a "half pint".

O-M-G! I know that the ads are random, but while engaging in this discussion, on the left was an ad for "Swim 2012" from bare necessities... advertising sizes from 6-24 and cup size up to K. Now THAT is serendipity!
