German Scientists Create Lithium Ion Battery that Can Charge an Electric Car for 27 Years

MOST unfortunate headline in a long time.

What they actually mean is:

These lithium ion batteries could last 27 years in an electric car

Of course they are going to have to recall all the electric car because they are using up the world supply. Hell, even their batteries are bipolar.

They charged and discharged their cells 10,000 times (27 x 365 = 9855), so they know they can be charged and discharged that many times and still have 85% of their original capacity. But they don't really know they will last 27 years. There might be other deterioration taking place over time in their lithium ion cells.

Loss of capacity in previous lithium ion cells was not a product of charge/discharge cycles, but rather just time.
