If Senator Ted Cruz's father Raphael Cruz used the pulpit of his megachurch to promote his son's election to the Senate, shouldn't his church lose its tax-exempt status? That's what I always heard.

I agree. We should start a petition at whitehouse.gov and have the IRS looking into this particular church's "tax-free" status.

Spag-hetti~I oh so agree. I am getting to the point where I would like to eliminate the tax-exempt status for all churches and political action committees. In fact, for almost any 501C.

Let me try again. The law is quite clear - NO POLITICS. The law has not changed, the RULES were changed, it was a political decision, around 1970, I think. Its easily fixed, just convince Obama to call the IRS and tell them to follow the LAW and get rid of the rules that contradict the LAW!

I actually think that the rule change occurred during a Democratic administration. I think the difference, now, is that the right, instead of using a bit of judgement, has gone full advantage of the situation. I think the most disturbing thing is that nobody is actually willing to do anything about it. Its kinda like the supreme decision about spending the big bucks, etc. The supremes were pretty clear that the congress could regulate and force the names of the contributors. When the dems were in charge they tried to do that and failed, then the Republicans came in and actually tried to do that too - and failed. I think the whole thing, pretty much, defines just who is in charge of congress?

Surely the concept of a separation between church and state would include an exclusion from state taxation of a church group? And, surely a congregation should not be required to pay a tax to exercise freedom of speech in its meetings or within the walls of the congregation's meeting place? Surely, within the concept of the separation of church and state, the church does not exist at the pleasure of the state?
