This is a take on the persistent and pernicious Confederate craziness that had never occurred to me...

Confederate flag was the flag of traitors
You can debate whether the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism. But the one thing you can't dispute: The Confederate flag was flown by traitors to the United States of America who slaughtered more than 110,000 U.S. soldiers.

never occurred to me

likewise and for good reason ... and that would be good reason as opposed as the contrived argument without much merit

I have considered the iconic Confederate battle flag ... well a battle flag.

The Civil War (or whatever other words anyone wants to describe or name it) is the premier example of the failure of our system of government (and the Founders for failing to foresee it as a possibility), which was unable to find compromise on the proverbial irreconcilable differences between states and the federal government. We have entered another cycle of deepening irreconcilable differences which i fear will require the skills of another Henry Clay or the blunt force persuasiveness of another Abraham Lincoln.
