To all ReaderRant members:

I have decided to take a break from writing a column for a while. My columns have become repetitious and I'm stuck in a rut of "America is doomed" and am quick to judge those who have partisan beliefs.

Maybe my recovery from last year's near-fatal accident is not complete. Maybe I'm just tired. I don't know. I do know that Capitol Hill Blue has strayed recently from its mission and that is my fault. I have asked Megan, the publisher, and her staff to take more control over the news side for the time being and help guide it back on course. The moderators here on RR do an excellent job and any recent problems have been my fault, not theirs.

I'm going to concentrate on my day job. Yes, I'm still a newspaperman who covers government, courts and features for BH Media papers in Virginia and I shoot video for TV stations and web sites. I'm also going to concentrate for a while on reviving an old news site that has been dormant since I went down on my motorcycle in last year's bovine encounter.

Carry on folks and, if you get a chance, wonder over to the news site at www.capitolhillblue.com, read the stories and support the efforts of the crew there to restore it to the glory it once had.

Take care folks. I'll check in when I have time but will refrain from commenting and all editing actions will be limited to the moderating crew here.

Doug

Be well Doug and we'll see you when you return. In the meantime, when you have night assignments, please use a car. Thank you in advance. smile

Doomed?
We are definitely at a crossroads.
Doug, before you decide that you think your prophecy of doom makes you guilty of too much hyperbole, consider the fact that Citizens United has enshrined the plutocracy and that it will take a Constitutional amendment to overturn it.

How likely does anybody think that's possible?
Hate to say it but while CU is unpopular with almost all Americans, unlimited campaign cash is wildly popular with the folks who helped make sure CU became a reality.
And they HAVE that cash, lots of it, and they'll use the power granted to them under CU to ensure that it never gets overturned.

Thus money is now speech AND a vote so if you have a billion dollars to spare you have a billion voices and a billion votes.
I'd say that's a recipe for doom if I ever heard one.

The question is, with all the cities, towns and states passing ordinances against CU, how do we translate that into national action?

That is the only way we will avoid doom in America.
And we need your help Doug, and your ideas, and your bully pulpit.

Just promise me you won't get any ideas about selling RR down the river to anyone.
And come back soon.
Like I said, you're much needed.`

Doug,
You deserve a break today... ugh, sounds like jingle... let me try again.

I loved the "bovine encounter" line, but I'm sorry it happened. Riding is one of the joys of my life, and I almost gave it up after my "encounter" with a pickup truck last year. RR is harder to give up, although I'm not sure that much less dangerous.

Enjoy the break, keep us informed, and hurry back soon, y'hear?
