The bbc did a public opinion survey
Apparently Israel ranks in the bottom four along with
Pakistan. And North Korea

My take on it is that Israel just does not care what any one else thinks. They act as they want.

I would wonder if at some point the USA may tire of current attached at the hip support for a nation that continues to sink to new lows in world respect. It may be fine for Israel not to care what anyone thinks. But that does not seem a viable plan for us foreign policy. Not that Israel would care

True Phil

But IMO American leaders will increasingly be willing to have policy variance with Israel
It will not happen quickly
Until it does

Right now it is happening with response to the unified Palestine government. Which the whole world sees as a positive and necessary development. I mean clearly no settlement of issues is possible with divided leadership.

No Israel is continuing to expand settlement in the West Bank. IMO opinion this is increasingly creating a de facto apartheid or annexation. Israel thinks of these areas as part of Israel. But what becomes of the existing residents what is their status in the state of Israel. The direction has an implacably inevitable trend. And the end game seems unconcienable to American sensibilities never mind world opinion

It just seems to me that a train wreck is in the distance

I never have gotten the rationale about why Israel is so important to us that we have to pretend they aren't just generally aggressive, obnoxious pricks.

It all started with Pres. Roosevelt, who needed solid Jewish support to carry out his New Deal. Plus, there were at the time and after WW II many good reasons support an Israeli state.

IMO those reasons have gone and Israel is now more of an aggressor than a victim. But I don't live there so all I care is that the US not keep pumping billions of dollars into them and certainly not allow us to be sucked into yet another war.

There are lots of points to be made on all sides. And a I agree with Phil's point that it is important not to chump two judgments given that Israel faces distinct challenges from the situation that she faces.

Among the most offensive points I have heard about this issue is what comes from religious zealots in the matter. Apparently many fundamentalist Christians feel that there are some prognostications in the Bible that require the state of Israel to exist and to continue to exist. And according to their logic it appears that as a consequence God requires our unquestioning support every coliseum decision by the state of Israel. Aside from the fundamental absurdity of that view. I am deeply offended by the idea that her form policy should be somehow shaped by someone's interpretation book of revelations. And perhaps even more of Stonhurst that anyone would have the temerity to suggest that these glitches so much have no impact on our government.

What ever the proper policy is we should not decide based upon the effing book of [censored] revelations. If there is a god and he has a plan. I think it is presumptuous to flatter ourselves the god cannot get along with out our help. That would be a pathetic god to worship IMO. But there is no accounting for bad taste. Especially it seems in religious matters.

Gosh it does seem like I have a bit of a wild hair recently about zealotry
