Quote:
n an exciting declaration, Pope Francis I stated that God should not seen as a “magician with a magic wand,” while unveiling a statue of his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Pope Francis also stated that evolution and the Big Bang theory are both true and not incompatible with the church’s views on the origins of the universe and life.

“When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,” Francis said, according to the Independent. Francis continued by stating that God “created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment.” Article

This should be very interesting... eh?

If the Catholic Church can get "back on track" it could do wonders for the world.

Especially if the cardinals, Archbishops and bishops became more like Christ-as they were commanded to be.

Popes have actually been saying they believe evolution etc. happened for a long time now. The evolution deniers are protestant bible-literalists. They make a lot of noise, but there really are not very many of them.

I loke to think that the church is evolving on this issue...

by not a lot do you mean 5-10% of registered republicans (I am assuming that this applies to only fundamentalist literalists and as such can not in anyone's imagination be anything other than a conservative)

and yet this small number of people have significant influence in education

I think, though, it would be hard to deny that THIS Pope has changed, significantly, the direction of the church in its attitude toward "controversial" issues - such as homosexuality and birth control. I get the feeling that there is more transformation to come.

Certainly, if you have to have a pope, this is the guy you want. Right from the first days of his election, when they talked a lot about his history, I liked him. His attitudes on various topics are decidedly Christian, as opposed to several other recent popes. Just not on evolution: The church has supported evolution (in an intelligent-design sort of way) for decades.
