I knew about chocolate, onions, garlic, and raisins, but what surprised me in the list is avocado.

Most of my dogs go and pick avocados right off the tree. They eat one or two per day, and have for their entire lives. Previous generations of dogs have done the same. I've NEVER seen one of them with any gastro distress from this. Maybe some dogs have a problem with avocados, but I think this is mostly an urban myth.

The last time I heard it, they couldn't handle a five carbon sugar that is present in unripe avocados. (Which turns into the fat in ripe avocados.) But all my dogs have ever eaten is unripe ones, unless they find an old ripe fallen fruit under a tree.

Chocolate toxicity calculator

They have to eat quite a bit - as in more than I eat in a serving. I ran the calculator for a 16# Jack Russell Terrier eating five dark Hershey's kisses (one ounce total; I generally have 2 or 3 kisses, or .4-.6 oz). The effect comes out "mild". I give my dogs a taste, perhaps 1/10 of one kiss, or .02 oz.

The bad elements also do not build up in the body, so toxicity is not cumulative.

Think I'm gonna go have some...
