For Canada, Justin Trudeau Election Offers Change of Tone - NYT

Quote:
OTTAWA ó Justin Trudeauís Canada is likely to present a very different face to the world than the one it wore under Stephen Harper, the Conservative prime minister he and his Liberals decisively routed on Monday.

Mr. Trudeau has promised some major policy changes, among them legalizing marijuana, dropping out of the American-led bombing campaign against the Islamic State and deficit spending to pump up the economy and rebuild infrastructure.

But the most noticeable difference will probably be in tone. Mr. Trudeau has been promising since he took over his floundering party in 2013 that he would put an end to Mr. Harperís often belligerent style of politics and diplomacy.

Compared to our Conservatives, the Canadian ones seem pretty moderate. So I will be very interested to see how "Liberal" the Canada will become.

Disagree.
Harper was a continuation of Bush-era policies and the main complaint from all my Canadian friends is that it FELT LIKE they were living under Bush.

Maybe the Canadian Harper was just less understated than his crazier US counterparts, eh?

Domestic policy of the Harper government

Quote:
At the beginning of the government's appointment, five policy priorities were identified in the areas of federal accountability, tax reform, crime, child care and health care.

I don't think the Harper government has been as extreme, but its themes should sound familiar: constricting government revenues (until it hurts), slashing social programs, expanding military budgets and aggressive posturing, environmental degradation and corporate welfare. Remind you of anyone?

So now that Canada had the audacity to get rid of a Tea Party-favorable government and elect a Liberal/Progressive/Socially Democratic government, I suppose that we should we expect John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Bibi Netanyahu, etc. to call for the US invasion of Canada, eh? gobsmacked
