Is something big afoot?

Paul Ryan's "demands" on the right wing nuts is a BIG middle finger. Are things in the GOP so bad that the more moderate Republicans starting a civil war to take their party back?

It was only a matter of time...

I started a thread on this before I saw yours, so I'm going to repost the content here:

How Paul Ryan got to (almost) yes

This is the scenario I envisioned last week. Ryan astutely is demanding concessions of all potential naysayers before placing himself in nomination. They must capitulate first, and then he locks them into their promise. If they don't, prepare for unprecedented Democratic gains in 2016 (which is why I hope they don't). If he succeeds, however, his will be a high profile and long tenured Speakership, and, frankly, will be very bad for the country.

Ryan is not the deep thinker he is portrayed to be. He's not dumb, but his ideas are very shallow. In particular, his economic ideas are mostly wrong, cartoonish, and doctrinaire. If he gets his way, we will have a new recession in about 3 years and will not have the tools to ameliorate it. His record is very, very bad (with one hopeful exception).

Unless things change, 9 members of the 435 member house can keep the House in turmoil. Must be heady stuff for them, huh? Ryan is playing this right. If he can't stifle the Freedumb caucus, he can't be Speaker, and certainly can't function effectively.

And you can pretty much bet your ass that they will, regardless of who might be chosen speaker. Ryan may win concessions from them up front but the ultra conservatives will invariably go back to their old ways as soon as Ryan does anything they disagree with.

I am reminded of the story of The Scorpion and the Frog

A sharp editorial opinion on the state of the GOP - by a Conservative:

The Incompetence Caucus

Quote:
Over the past 30 years, or at least since Rush Limbaugh came on the scene, the Republican rhetorical tone has grown ever more bombastic, hyperbolic and imbalanced. Public figures are prisoners of their own prose styles, and Republicans from Newt Gingrich through Ben Carson have become addicted to a crisis mentality. Civilization was always on the brink of collapse. Every setback, like the passage of Obamacare, became the ruination of the republic. Comparisons to Nazi Germany became a staple.
