CBS News Legend Morley Safer Dies One Week After ‘60 Minutes’ Retirement

Quote:
Morley Safer—who, at 84, announced his retirement last week after more than five decades at CBS News, all but six years of that peerless stretch as a star correspondent for 60 Minutes—has died.

As a combat reporter in Vietnam, ducking sniper’s bullets and enemy mortars while embedded with American soldiers on patrol, “he was as cool as a hog on ice,” retired Brig. Gen. Joe Stringham, a former Green Beret commander, recalled for Morley Safer: A Reporter’s Life, an hour-long special that aired last Sunday.

Alan Young, ‘Mister Ed’ Star, Dies at 96

Quote:
Alan Young, who gamely played straight man to a talking horse for five years in classic sitcom “Mr. Ed,” died Thursday at the Motion Picture and Television Home in Woodland Hills, Calif. He was 96.

On the series, which ran from 1961-66 on CBS, Young played architect Wilbur Post, who was married to Carol (played by Connie Hines, who died in 2009) and kept a horse, Mr. Ed, in their suburban stable. Mr. Ed, voiced by Allan “Rocky” Lane, would speak only to Wilbur, but given Mr. Ed’s rather outlandish personality and the superbly mild affect of Young’s Wilbur, just who owned whom could occasionally be a matter of debate.

Young also voiced Scrooge McDuck and numerous other animated characters, as well as guesting on dozens of TV shows.

Hey rick. It’s not that they passed while being very old people. It’s that they passed at all. As we all shall.

You might sit there in your smugness of youth-- but you too are also going to expire sometime........ Sooner---- than you might desire.
