Happy Holidays and Welcome the the Reader Rant Roundtable for December 2016

LET AMERICA BE AMERICA AGAIN
Langston Hughes, 1902 - 1967

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There’s never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this “homeland of the free.”)

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the Negro bearing slavery’s scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek—
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one’s own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the Negro, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean—
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
Beaten yet today—O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I’m the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That’s made America the land it has become.
O, I’m the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home—
For I’m the one who left dark Ireland’s shore,
And Poland’s plain, and England’s grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa’s strand I came
To build a “homeland of the free.”

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we’ve dreamed
And all the songs we’ve sung
And all the hopes we’ve held
And all the flags we’ve hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay—
Except the dream that’s almost dead today.

O, let America be America again—
The land that never has been yet—
And yet must be—the land where every man is free.
The land that’s mine—the poor man’s, Indian’s, Negro’s, ME—
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose—
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people’s lives,
We must take back our land again,
America!

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath—
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain—
All, all the stretch of these great green states—
And make America again!
(Written in 1935 at the height of the Great Depression)

From the right.
Can there be hope for a segment of America that thinks this way?

On a brighter note...
Winter is coming, and with it the light returns. Days will be growing longer again as we wend our way towards Spring.

Adjust your sails folks, there are rocky shoals ahead and the winds have shifted.

There is a new forum under Political Issues, grimly titled "The Trump Administration".
It's all shiny and hasn't even been used yet, although existing Trump topics may wind up getting moved into it.
In the meantime, anyone brave enough is cordially invited to be the first to introduce a New Topic!

Maybe we'll get a "Christmas miracle", and PA, WI and MI will all go to Clinton after the recount.

"Surprise, surprise, surprise!" to quote Gomer Pyle.

Lots of gays, lesbians, and liberals are already armed and ready to defend themselves or their homes. People committing violent acts while yelling something about voting for Trump as justification, are still just as likely to die as they were before the election.

Trump voters should remember that there were over two million more Hillary voters out there. You are out-numbered.

Respect for Elective Offices

Elected Officials, both past and present, are referred to by name, not by nickname or by verbal/visual insulting reference. Feel free to criticize an elected official's actions, but don't attack the person. Address what the person did, not what the person "is".

TRUMP WARNS THAT COMPANIES SHIPPING JOBS OVERSEAS WILL BE SLAPPED WITH ENORMOUS BRIBES

Quote:
NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report)—President-elect Donald J. Trump drew a line in the sand on Friday as he warned that U.S. companies planning to ship jobs overseas will be slapped with enormous bribes.

“If you think you’re going to get away with sending jobs out of the U.S., think again,” Trump said. “You are about to be bribed, big league.”

Phil, a question:
Trump IS a fascist, a bigot, homophobic, misogynistic, racist, a liar... and much more that I omit.
These are facts that can be verified by his words and actions.
Are we not allowed to state these facts?

I second the motion. I would also like to extend the suggestion to non-elected people too. Mocking-up people's names to express displeasure and/or disapproval is a very juvenile approach, which may be appropriate up to about the second-grade level, but totally inappropriate afterwards.

I agree, Joe, and I support the rule, but I am going to have a difficult time once this election becomes official. It is especially hard when the elected official uses playground verbiage and tactics.

I have a slight problem with that one because satire is a cornerstone of the Fourth Estate, and your "bigger tent" suddenly includes some incredibly evil people. Grover Norquist, Lewis Powell, Frank Luntz, James O'Keefe, and a whole roster of UNELECTED but APPPOINTED officials who show open and naked contempt for almost everything that American democracy is supposed to be about.

Shall we hold Jerry Falwell Jr. and Betsy DeVos harmless from satire too? I believe that elected officials should be given at least some modicum of respect regarding their names, but this too might be open to some interpretation if you go back and look over some of Doug Thompson's more pointed editorials and rants.
He uses the proper names but does not hesitate to hang whatever jacket on them that is appropriate to the evils they commit.

Thus, if Donald Trump wishes to exercise the power to send each and every American "emergency text messages" that we cannot block, and they wind up consisting of admonishments and warnings not to criticize him in public or on social media, I suspect more than a few honorable journalists are going to assign him the title of "Dear Leader."

If the shoe fits...

Or I could be wrong wink

My thought as well. I'm fine with stopping the use of nicknames like "il Douche de L'Orange", but if a word fits, like fascist, then it should not be prohibited. And good satire is high literature.

Suppose to snow here in Puget Sound starting at midnight (Mon/Tues am). I'm packing a suitcase and brining Sammy to work with me in our vanpool van tomorrow afternoon when I leave for work. I'll pack for three days and bring enough food for him for three days. Wednesday afternoon/night is supposed to be the worst of it.

If I have fresh clothes (we have a full working gym with showers on campus plus two Corporate Cafeterias) and Sammy and his food and medicines with me, I'll be good. Should be fun. laugh

The forty year effort to force the news industry into a profit model has finally exposed this country to an almost unstoppable fake news industry which will ultimately make it impossible for Americans to determine the credibility of anything they see and hear.
This is the price we pay when EVERYTHING, absolutely EVERYTHING, is tied to PROFIT.
Fake news, especially the state sanctioned kind coming from Russia, is a national security threat with global implications.

I'm the main vanpool driver and my backup driver doesn't want to drive in it either. Hmm

Better safe than sorry, brother. Especially for Sammy. smile

I'd be more worried about the fake news coming from the State Sanctioned MSM right here in the good ol' U.S. of A.
That kind has been known to start wars that are still going on as we speak. They have destabilized entire regions of the globe. They could, under a new management, even start a nuclear war. That, my friend, scares the bejeesus outta me.

Welp it didn't snow, and Sammy and I mede it home safely. Same game-plan for Wednesday: Take Sammy to work along my now already packed suitcase of three days of clothes too. Tomorrow it's supposed to be sunny.

Weird we don't have a thread on the Walter Scott killing. It seems like something we would have documented and discussed. Hmm

Anyway, it's a shame that a jury, seeing a black man being shot in the back five times, couldn't decide if it was murder. cry

Seems like one juror held out - what is worse is that POC are already calling the verdict before the jury even deliberates. This is criminal and the only hope is that the movements grow and become stronger as a result of this aberration.

In other news, rock and roll history is about to be made once again.
Before my business partner killed himself in 1994, he had gone around borrowing money here and there in a desperate effort to keep his financial ship afloat and, apparently at one point left some of the original AMPEX 2-inch videotape reels of the 1972 Leon Russell concert as collateral.
When I re-released the concert on DVD all I had to work with were the 3/4 inch Umatic SP sub-masters, as the original reels and the 1-inch dubs had mysteriously gone missing from his storage.
In 2009, a man in Malibu contacted me online, saying he had something that might interest me. He was the guy Alan borrowed money from, and he had been keeping the reels in the hopes of getting paid back and didn't even know Alan had committed suicide.

I've cleaned up what is hopefully the last of Alan's messes and now have the reels once again, and they are up in Burbank being transferred to digital HD. And boy oh boy are they gonna look great.

Raising the considerable sum of money required to get them out of hock has consumed all of my working time for the last year or more.
It was a high price to pay but well worth it.
Once I get these on backup hard drive, I can exhale.

I only wish this had happened long before Leon left us.

I often despair that modern technology is wiping out decades of important information. I have a cassette collection and an album collection that are virtually unusable anymore, although I now have the systems in place to transfer them to digital media. The time involved in that process, though, is staggering.

I have over 8000 photos I've taken over the years with a wide variety of film cameras.
I began the process of digitalizing them 12 years ago. Up to now, I've just barely made a dent.
The cost of having someone else do it is extremely prohibitive. I have negatives of all sizes, and therein lies the problem. You need specific equipment to digitalize the negatives of each size. Maybe I'll finish before I kick. Then, my heirs can throw them out LOL

Something we're going to lose in this digital age is the thousands upon thousands of actual photographs that have come down to us over the years. Printed photos were stored away in boxes and albums and passed down as family members died off. Old computers, hard drives, flash drives and phones that now contain the images are tossed without a second thought. Literally millions of images are stored in photobucket and other cloud based accounts whose owners will eventually die without leaving passwords to access them. More pictures are now being taking than ever before with smartphones rather than cameras and fewer of them will ever see the light of day or be saved for future generations.

People foolishly call this the "Information Age" -- I call it the "Holocaust of Information."

Human languages are disappearing like summer snow, same with cultures, domestic plant and animal varieties, and most disturbingly, vast numbers of wild species in this present "Sixth Mass Extinction."

The amount of information in species genetics and organization of the biosphere dwarf the sum total of all human information which has ever existed.

Now, the "Age of Lies and Disinformation" -- that I could agree with !!

I don't have all of them as prints. Transforming the negatives into digital images produces better quality prints. But it is an expensive and pain in the butt process.

In the mid-70's I took a long backpacking trip across the Selway-Bitterrot Wilderness; 10 days and 110 miles. I had six pounds of excellent camera gear with me, nearly 10% of my total load (you count ounces on a trip like that). I took lots of photos. Just after the next Christmas, on the morning of New Year's Eve, the old log cabin I had just moved into on a ranch outside of Missoula, burned to the ground along with my Pentax and all my photos.

The following August I went on another backpack across the Frank Church River of No Return Widerness - 130 miles and 13 days. No camera.

Some forty years later I still have many memories of the second trip, but mostly only remember a few of the photos from the first.

My sister and I do a lot of genealogy research. In the late 80's we spent a week gathering records in the counties where our great grandparents' families were from, tracking down relatives, and finding tombstones in graveyards around Illinois. I photographed all of it. I had about 5 rolls of film from that trip when my camera kit was stolen. Even though it was a special camera to me, as it was the first one bought with my own money and got me through college when I was working as a stringer for local papers, it was the loss of the research that I never recovered from.

Welp, it finally snowed today. Not at all like what was predicted. We got 1.0" - 1.5" of snow. The snow really didn't start until 8pm and finished around 1am.

I drove the vanpool van really slowly. Sammy and I got home safely. smile

To finish the thought... My sister and I still reminisce about that trip, and we have continued to search for and find distant relations. We're also keenly aware that many of the family members we met then are no longer with us to share their memories. It has inspired me to back up everything and to spread the information as far as possible while I can. I'm becoming more active on Ancestry, sharing with others who are on a similar quest. I've found things about my wife's family that were never known, or shared.

Sometimes the hardest lessons are the ones best learned. And sometimes the best memories are not recorded except in our own reveries.

Worst birthday EVER two years in a row for my darling wife Karen.
Stuck in the VA Hospital with a raging infection just like last year at this time. Hoping to get her sprung out of there by today, or Tuesday, maybe Wednesday.
