The Carrier deal in which Donald Trump negotiated with United Technologies to keep the company from moving jobs to Mexico continues to unravel. One of the terms of the deal was that Carrier would invest $16 million in its Indiana facility, but now it appears that much of that investment will involve automation that will ultimately cost many workers their jobs.

...

“Automation means less people,” Hayes said on CNN. “I think we’ll have a reduction of workforce at some point in time once they get all the automation in and up and running.” At this point, there is no indication of how many jobs will be lost when the plant automates.

So much for that dog and pony show that Trump put on a few weeks ago. Effectively, Trump guranteed tax payer money to eliminate human jobs with robots.

well at that point Mr Trump will renegotiate a deal providing Carrier with more tax breaks and who knows may actually let the American taxpayer finance Carrier for free

Trump just nominated as Labor secretary, Andrew Pudzer of Carl’s Jr., who is a big fan of automating everything, because robot workers can’t sue you for pinching them on the butt or anything like that. Just last month, Pudzer told Business Insider that robots were “always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there’s never a slip-and-fall, or an age, sex, or race discrimination case.”

Sorry folks but that is part of a larger picture which has been ignored for well over a decade.
I even posted thoughts on it right here at the Rant and was told I was engaging in a bit of hyperbole.

WRONG, not hyperbole, reality. Artificial intelligence, advanced robotics and Moore's Law are converging at an exponential rate which is dizzying to behold.
I will AGAIN restate my prediction.
Half of all human labor jobs....HALF, in the entire WORLD, will BE OBSOLETE in ten years.

When do you predict that the obsolescence of so many jobs will kill the automated industries who don't have enough of a market to survive?

Hmmm...millions of unemployed starving people. Greenhouse gasses warming the planet. Natural resources dwindling. We've been thinking the movie "Idiocracy" was prophetic of the coming days. Perhaps "Soylent Green" will prove to be even more so.

In fact, as was pointed out, without markets (i.e. wage earning consumers) capitalism can't survive.
Perhaps the Rolling Stones were more prophetic:

Obviously, our billionaire rulers will treat us as they would all other redundant and useless equipment in their factories -- eliminate us in the most economical way.

That's the sixty four billion dollar question.
It's their Pandora's Box.

I think is it everyone's

liberals can't stop automation ... the free market (or even a tightly controlled market) will move toward cost savings through automation

eventually we will be faced with an increasingly larger labor participation rate. some argue the lost jobs will be replaced with jobs with different skills. How long can that go on??? At some point people have to recognize most of what they do can be automated and therefore they will be replaced by AI Joe.

I wonder when a machine will be "smart" enough to solve independently Fermat's Theorem and in maybe a few minutes, not 400 years. What is left for humans to do???
