South African hunter WAS killed by a crocodile, DNA tests on human remains found inside a beast prove

Ekin Karasin and Kelly Mclaughlin
The Daily Mail
April 20, 2017

Quote:
DNA tests of the carcass of a crocodile shot in Zimbabwe confirm that the reptile had eaten a missing South African hunter.

Scott Van Zyl, 44, vanished last week after going on a hunting safari on the banks of the Limpopo river with a Zimbabwean tracker and a pack of dogs.

The married father-of-two, whose company runs hunting trips for foreign clients, was believed he had been eaten by crocodiles and recent tests confirm it.

The Purist
by Ogden Nash

I give you now Professor Twist,
A conscientious scientist,
Trustees exclaimed, "He never bungles!"
And sent him off to distant jungles.
Camped on a tropic riverside,
One day he missed his loving bride.
She had, the guide informed him later,
Been eaten by an alligator.
Professor Twist could not but smile.
"You mean," he said, "a crocodile."

Obviously, it was a fair fight: That's REAL sportsmanship!

Real men eschew helicopters, Land Rovers, high-powered rifles, and clothes. They fight animals with weapons they craft themselves on site.

Sounds good, but it was actually a lot messier: Big Game Hunter shot Elephant 1. Elephant 2 came in from the side and grabbed Big Game hunter. Hunter 2 shoots Elephant 2. Elephant 2 falls on Big Game Hunter and squashes him like a bug.

It's got all the elements of a good story: Pathos, loyalty, friendship, villains, action, etc. But the elephants are the good guys in this story.

Watched an interesting TED talk the other day. It was a systems ecologist talking about desertification. For decades they have been trying all sorts of things in Africa (and other places, too) to deal with this. Like getting rid of cattle, moving native people out, increasing the numbers of top predators, etc. All the "good stuff" of the "ecology movement". Doesn't work. Desert is growing, grasslands shrinking. Like by millions of hectares!

Turns out, what you need is vast herds of migratory grazers moving around on the land. They fertilize the land and every spring you get more rich grassland and less desert. More temperate weather, too. The grass decays just in time for the next rainy season and more grass.

You could do that by forced breeding of antelopes, giraffes, zebras, etc. along with the top predators to eat the slow, but that is very difficult. It's a lot easier to do with cattle and Masai tribesmen (or cowboys here in the US) moving herds around to fresh grasslands. You don't even have to pay the Masai! Just let them do what they have been doing for thousands of years. And instead of feeding a huge population boost of lions, we humans can eat the excess beef.
