Carried away: The inside story of how the Carl Vinson's canceled port visit sparked a global crisis.

Quote:
In early April, officials at U.S. Pacific Command were developing plans to respond to a sharp rise in tensions with North Korea. Defense Secretary James Mattis ordered PACOM Commander Adm. Harry Harris to come up with “robust and sustainable” options for North Korea if President Trump ordered a strike on the rogue regime, according to four defense officials who spoke on background.
....
The plan was to truncate a secretive exercise with the Australians near Indonesia, to cancel Vinson’s visit to Perth and then head the direction of the Korean Peninsula — meaning Vinson would be off North Korea by the end of the month.
And then things went off the rails...
Quote:
On April 10, President Trump threw gasoline on a growing fire by implying in an interview with Fox Business News that the administration had directed the carrier to proceed to Korea.

"We are sending an armada, very powerful," he said. "We have submarines, very powerful, far more powerful than an aircraft carrier, that I can tell you."

From the previous article:
Quote:
Some reporters were getting it right. After the confusing press conference, USNI News’s Sam Lagrone filed a story that corrected Mattis and reported that Vinson was participating in the exercises before heading to North Korea. But in the larger media, major outlets were reporting what by now was accepted (but completely wrong) wisdom: that Vinson and her escorts were headed for a confrontation with Kim Jong Un.

I understood from the President's remarks a vast armada was on the way to the Sea of Japan. What I did not understand was the NK response to the phantom fleet.

Maybe the Trump Strategy is use harsh language to force them to surrender.

I assume that Trillin is working overtime in this new target-rich environment. His books of poetry needed some lead time with the Bush administration, but not with this rapid Very very GREATEST first 100 days, Amazing! Time flies when you are having fun!

President Trump has done nothing but embarrass us Americans, since taking Office, on the world stage. Hmm

What is really exposed in this sequence of events is Trump's excruciating ignorance of... Well, almost everything. Oblivious is a good word, but inadequate. It's fairly clear that Trump was told early on about Admiral Harris' plan to bolster readiness, but misunderstood its timing and purpose. That displays profound ignorance of military operations, especially naval. He compounded that by blustering about it publicly, betraying stupidity about national security and international relations. His staff's efforts to "elucidate the incomprehensible" fed the fire.

Here we are, now, two weeks later and the ships are still not in place, but are under threat. Any element of "surprise" has been eliminated, and the patience needed to deal with nitroglycerin has been corrupted by his impatience and ignorance.

This is a pretty good indicator of how well he will handle any future conflict:

Total incompetence.

especially naval.

Perhaps he was simply contemplating his own navel while misunderstanding the timing and purpose of the other naval.

President Obama said, on multiple occasions, that no matter how prepared one thinks they are to assume the office of the President, there is more to the office and more to learn than one can know until they assume the office.
Quote:
"I make a mistake, you know, every hour, every day," he said laughing.

"There's always things that you're learning in the job. And I have no doubt that I'm a better President now than the day I took office just because you get more experience."
NY Daily News. The difference, I think, is that Obama acknowledged that, and approached the position with humility. Trump is so full of hubris he refuses to learn. He believes that he already knows everything and will never acknowledge an error. Ever. That makes him extremely dangerous.

Obama acknowledged that he didn't know everything, found the very best people to work in his administration instead of repaying favors, and then listened to a wide variety of people (including the opposition) before making a decision. He was also an expert himself on Constitutional Law, having taught it at the University level, so almost every Executive Order was constitutional from the start.

Some people may be on an "expertise is bad" kick but nothing succeeds like getting advice from experts before you act. You would think that Trump would be able to buy the best legal advice ever, but he seems to instead get legal advice that matches his desires. No wonder he has so many lawsuits filed against him and spends so much on settlements. He fires anybody who tells him the truth.

Can you imagine a world were Donald Trump invested all his father's money in the S&P500 and tax free government bonds, because he actually paid attention to real expert advice? He would sit at home clipping bond coupons and making charitable contributions to things like Bill Gates and his wife. He would be widely respected by the kind of people whose respect means something. No cheesy beauty pageants or casinos: Instead buildings on Ivy League campuses, museum wings. hospitals. etc.
