Dana Point bar sparks furor over 'green cards' and an inflatable wall for Cinco de Mayo

Emily Alpert Reyes
Los Angeles Times
May 7, 2017

Quote:
Bar owner Paul Hennessey says he wanted to get people talking.

To mark Cinco de Mayo, his Dana Point bar set up an inflatable wall for patrons to climb over — and handed out “green cards” that guaranteed one free drink to those who clambered to the top.

Since then, Hennessey’s Tavern has gotten angry phone calls. Yelp reviewers have called the Cinco de Mayo event disgusting, tasteless and racist.

Hillary carried Orange County. It was the first time a Democratic presidential candidate had done so in 80 years (FDR over Alf Landon, 1936).

Did you notice that the owner was actually protesting the proposed wall?

Personally, if it was not intended to denigrate immigrants, but celebrate them (after all, this was Cinco de Mayo), I'm not offended at all.

how I look at almost everything in life .... I thought it was a kids thing like moonwalk things until the writer pointed out how naive I am ... I was buying chips and some pineapple peach salsa on Friday and clerk said, you must be celebrating 5 of May to which I said well i could be if i knew it was cinco de cinco day ... like a leaf floating gently in a soft breeze

Interestingly, it's not very important in Mexico. It celebrates the defeat in 1862 of a French army by vastly outnumbered Mexicans, but a year later the French sent an overwhelming force, occupied Mexico City, and installed Emperor Maximilian I. Much more significant was 1867, when Benito Juarez kicked them out and established a legitimate Mexican government.

The important thing for us is that keeping the French busy in Mexico kept them out of our Civil War, where they would have sided with the South.
