I am convinced that human beings are so feeble-minded and irresponsible that if nuclear waste is stored within their reach, there will inevitably be catastrophe.

Two things come to mind. The first is that there are actually plans for modular nukes (small and can be buried and cannot go bad) that can use nuclear waste to power them. The second is that there IS a private party in charge of the cleanup and overseen by the department. It should also be said that the department of energy has, for many hears, absolutely supported their private, incompetent (google "incompetent hanford contractor"), and out of control private contractor to the tune of several billions of dollars. To get this one under control they REALLY need an independent commission to take this thing over and get the job done before there is an incredible disaster!

This is, I fear, a situation wherein government bureaucracy has simply proven to be incompetent, for many years, and they need a REAL change to get the job done.
