This has the potential to be a watershed moment in reclaiming democracy for the people.
Will the Supreme Court draw the line on gerrymandering?
Quote:
One of the most far-reaching issues reaching this court this year and next is the issue of partisan gerrymandering. Gerrymandering is the practice by which one party jimmies the lines so that the other side loses no matter who has the majority of votes. Since Judge Merrick Garland was not confirmed for the seat now occupied by Justice Neil Gorsuch, Justice Anthony Kennedy is the crucial vote. And there has been some ground to believe he might lean toward a way to outlaw the practice.

Imagine a world where votes actually counted. Where the people elected their Representatives...

The SCOTUS has recognized in several cases recently that gerrymandering is racially motivated and therefore, illegal. smile

That nightmare scenario sends chills down the spine of every Right-thinking American.

There's an inherent danger in gerrymandering: You try to make as many districts as possible have slight majorities for your Party, so you spread your votes over the maximum number of districts. The result is that you win with say 55% majorities in most of those districts.

The downside, is that there are no really safe districts. If your Party takes a 6% hit (for example by passing AHCA) then you lose EVERY district! I'm betting this will happen in 2018. Republicans seem hell-bent on screwing over their constituents.

I pray that some day there will be a wave big enough to do that, Pia, but in the main, it hasn't happened yet, and we've been suffering for decades because of that. My patience is at an end.

In 1862 we had the Homestead Act which subdivided land into squares. What an amazing concept.
