Independence: "freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others." It is a state that we all strive for, and a desire try to instill in our offspring (with varying degrees of success...). It is something that we, and entire nations, celebrate and revere - some even fetishize the concept! We get there by various means: rebellion, professional competence, wealth.

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress issued its "Declaration of Independence" (although the vote actually took place on July 2nd, something that John Adams chafed about for years; History of the Fourth of July). "The Fourth of July" has been celebrated since our nation's inception (although it only became a national holiday in 1941). "Independence Days" are celebrated by various countries the world over (of course, not on the same day as ours - that was taken!). List of national independence days - Wikipedia.

Famous speeches have been made commemorating events on that day: The Gettysburg Address commemorated that battle that occurred on that date "Four Score and Seven Years" later. And, of course, who can forget President Thomas Whitmore's stirring commemoration speech:
Oh, wait, he was a fake President... it was just entertainment. It's not like we have real fake Presidents who come from the entertainment industry.

Perhaps, then, it is important to remember what real independence means - it doesn't mean separation from others, rejection of interconnectedness, or responsibility to others - rather it is about having the ability and wherewithal to establish our place in our family, our community, our society, the world. We don't cease to be a child of our parents, or parents to our children, or siblings to our siblings - we just have a different relationship to them. We still are part of our larger communities - paying taxes, participating in elections, food drives, and community service - as we gain benefits from their contributions in the form of roads, police and fire protection, and other services. Remember, it was the United States that declared its independence from England, not 13 independent colonies. It was the American Revolution. It was a new "nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." It is our responsibility to ensure "that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

To do that, we have entered into treaties with other independent nations, fought wars alongside them and they with us, shed blood and expended treasure for mutual benefit. There is a certain segment of our society - and certain national leaders - who forget that. We all gain a benefit from cooperation with others. As Benjamin Franklin put it, "We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately." That is the true measure of independence - the ability to cooperate with other for mutual benefit.

Welcome to the Round Table for July 2017.

I think that is not supposed to be the original Statue of Liberty. The scale is wrong. It has to be a 1/2 size replica. Also pure copper would decompose over a relatively short time period. After a few hundred years of ocean exposure it would melt away to nothing. The original Planet of the Apes movie had some space ship chronometer readings that said it was +2000 years elapsed time.

Do you mean the plot is "independent" of realism?

Or if you're already tired of that distraction, here's an even more interesting one for you.

Quote:
"Those who've become accustomed to hearing bluegrass music when they turn the dial to 105.5 FM in D.C. are in for a surprise—the bandwidth now broadcasts Sputnik, a “global wire, radio and digital news service" funded by the Russian government.
Indeed, Sputnik is surely the only media outlet in D.C. where a former Breitbart investigative reporter shares an office with a Green Party candidate for city council. Launched in 2014, it operates out of an office on K Street NW by Farragut North."

Russian-Funded News Station Replaces Bluegrass on 105.5 FM

Do they plan on having Russian-sponsored bluegrass music?

Yeah except that's shortwave...this is the commercial broadcast spectrum. There's no comparison because there are no advertisers on RFE. If it was in the commercial broadcast spectrum (AM or FM) perhaps it would be able to make an even bigger impact in the countries where it is heard.
