Independence: "freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others." It is a state that we all strive for, and a desire try to instill in our offspring (with varying degrees of success...). It is something that we, and entire nations, celebrate and revere - some even fetishize the concept! We get there by various means: rebellion, professional competence, wealth.

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress issued its "Declaration of Independence" (although the vote actually took place on July 2nd, something that John Adams chafed about for years; History of the Fourth of July). "The Fourth of July" has been celebrated since our nation's inception (although it only became a national holiday in 1941). "Independence Days" are celebrated by various countries the world over (of course, not on the same day as ours - that was taken!). List of national independence days - Wikipedia.

Famous speeches have been made commemorating events on that day: The Gettysburg Address commemorated that battle that occurred on that date "Four Score and Seven Years" later. And, of course, who can forget President Thomas Whitmore's stirring commemoration speech:
Oh, wait, he was a fake President... it was just entertainment. It's not like we have real fake Presidents who come from the entertainment industry.

Perhaps, then, it is important to remember what real independence means - it doesn't mean separation from others, rejection of interconnectedness, or responsibility to others - rather it is about having the ability and wherewithal to establish our place in our family, our community, our society, the world. We don't cease to be a child of our parents, or parents to our children, or siblings to our siblings - we just have a different relationship to them. We still are part of our larger communities - paying taxes, participating in elections, food drives, and community service - as we gain benefits from their contributions in the form of roads, police and fire protection, and other services. Remember, it was the United States that declared its independence from England, not 13 independent colonies. It was the American Revolution. It was a new "nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." It is our responsibility to ensure "that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

To do that, we have entered into treaties with other independent nations, fought wars alongside them and they with us, shed blood and expended treasure for mutual benefit. There is a certain segment of our society - and certain national leaders - who forget that. We all gain a benefit from cooperation with others. As Benjamin Franklin put it, "We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately." That is the true measure of independence - the ability to cooperate with other for mutual benefit.

Welcome to the Round Table for July 2017.

I think that is not supposed to be the original Statue of Liberty. The scale is wrong. It has to be a 1/2 size replica. Also pure copper would decompose over a relatively short time period. After a few hundred years of ocean exposure it would melt away to nothing. The original Planet of the Apes movie had some space ship chronometer readings that said it was +2000 years elapsed time.

Do you mean the plot is "independent" of realism?

Or if you're already tired of that distraction, here's an even more interesting one for you.

Quote:
"Those who've become accustomed to hearing bluegrass music when they turn the dial to 105.5 FM in D.C. are in for a surprise—the bandwidth now broadcasts Sputnik, a “global wire, radio and digital news service" funded by the Russian government.
Indeed, Sputnik is surely the only media outlet in D.C. where a former Breitbart investigative reporter shares an office with a Green Party candidate for city council. Launched in 2014, it operates out of an office on K Street NW by Farragut North."

Russian-Funded News Station Replaces Bluegrass on 105.5 FM

Yeah except that's shortwave...this is the commercial broadcast spectrum. There's no comparison because there are no advertisers on RFE. If it was in the commercial broadcast spectrum (AM or FM) perhaps it would be able to make an even bigger impact in the countries where it is heard.

New Jersey doesn't have a budget, so Chris Christie has shut-down the usual amenities in the state including state parks and state beaches. Campers on the beaches were asked to leave, including a boy scout's troop.

...but look at this aerial shot of a beach in front of the Governor's mansion. That's not a beached whale - that's Chris Christie enjoying the very beach which he ordered closed.

Said Christie:
Quote:
“Run for governor and you can have a residence [on the beach.]"

I'm seeing a lot of sponsored web links to a site that promotes a "new energy source" that "could completely displace solar". I've actually watched their spiel and it is all about lithium.

Now lithium is great for making batteries and all, but lithium itself is NOT a primary energy source and lithium batteries are NOT primary cells. You never get as much energy out of a lithium battery as you put in so they are actually an energy sink! (a consumer of energy)

All the BS they are slinging makes me really doubt they understand anything about lithium. And yet I keep on seeing sponsored links from otherwise very reputable websites. Shouldn't there be some sort of way to report this so they are not participants in fraud?

Everyone I know in other countries is wishing me Happy Independence Day but here at home, Right wingers on Twitter had a huge meltdown when National Public Radio tweeted out the text of the Declaration of Independence, saying, among other things, that "NPR is shitting on the president."

Just found the perfect place to watch fireworks: The local Mexican supermarket parking lot! It was as close as you want to be, in terms of noise. Then after the grand finale, I went inside and bought some telera rolls since they are open until 10.

I saw over a dozen different shows from the roof of my 7-story apt building on the Foss Waterway on the Puget Sound. The best fireworks were on Vashon Island. Dash Point had the second best. The City of Tacoma's at Point Defiance wasn't high enough in the air to see all of it.

The headline of this piece doesn't do justice to the importance of the content.
How CNN found the Reddit user behind the Trump wrestling GIF. It is probably worthy of a thread of its own.

The gist is this: the maker of the GIF apologized for being a troll when he realized that CNN had tracked him down. He also acknowledged what trolling really is - bullying, and an addiction. Those points are really more important than what happened.

Maybe our Dear Leader should take note.

What happens when an online troll is unmasked can sometimes be an important milestone, for all.

I can't get enough of people losing their shee-it online because @NPR tweeted the Declaration of Independence on Twitter.
Literally the best example of why many Trump supporters might just be the worst Americans ever and don't even know why.
They talk about America, they rage on patriotism but don't even recognize the founding documents when they read them.
I hope NPR starts tweeting the Constitution next.
Oh wait, Trump already said it was "archaic" and "bad for the country", and his fans automatically agree.

Trumpees would have been Tories in the American Revolution. Maybe that's why they are cool with the idea of King Trump.

One would have to admit, having witnessed the disaster that is the modern world, that giving the bully pulpit to a benign and benevolent monarch, ordained by the Almighty and trained in the Art of State from birth is a far superior system to one based on the random whim of whoever gets to count the votes.

After just 10 days of recreational marijuana sales, Nevada's pot dispensaries are running out. Seems they appointed the major liquor distributors as the pot distributors, but the government hasn't licensed any of them yet!

They sold all of their medical marijuana supply to recreational users and now the folks who need medical marijuana can't get it.

It takes about 75 days to force pot clones into harvestable buds (with 24 hour a day light) and then a couple of weeks to dry it. You can only take about 10 clones off one mother plant per month. So it's going to be a while before the growers can meet demand. Not to mention that there are no licensed liquor distributor middlemen.

Putting the liquor guys in the middle is pure political corruption meant to mollify them because of feared diminished liquor sales. Pot growers and pot sellers really have zero need for middlemen. But the mob needs their cut.

If Jared Kushner gets to keep his security clearance then we should just go ahead issue a security clearance to Abu bakr al-Bagdadi.
Clearly we've already issued security clearances to Vlad and his bunch.

Good point! It's only about 45 miles from Las Vegas to the California border. Some enterprising person or maybe Indian Tribe could setup a dispensary/medical marijuana card mill right inside California. We don't get recreational sales until January, though if somebody gives you some pot you can smoke it without a card or even grow it. (6 plant limit)

What do you think is going through the mind of four-star General John Kelly at this moment, in the wake of the Scaramucci implosion?

Disagree, I don't think ANY of the staff thinks that they have to listen to a general, because most of them make more money than a general, and they are therefore "smarter than a general".

Scaramuchi has brought the average tenure of a White House aide down by weeks. How do you count Kelly? Is Chief of Staff a lateral transfer? What happens if Sessions gets moved?
