I am just like Trump - going on a working vacation. I got invited to row a support boat for the making of a movie to be used to lobby for Wild and Scenic River designation for the Gila River. We'll be on for five days, if the monsoons do their job and put enough water in the river.

My curiosity got the better of me. I see a lot of images of a dry river bed. Is the Gila more of a seasonal stream?

It's not seasonal in the upper reaches in New Mexico (much of it wilderness), but lower down in ag country there are often enough straws in it to completely dry it up. There is a load of friction over water rights, proving the old adage, "Whiskey is for drinkin', water is for fightin'."

Or in my case, no water is for cutting down all your now-dead avocado trees. Thanks, Vallecitos Water District.

We don't have to fight people up-river stealing all our water. It comes (or doesn't come) via water pipe. A while back they said: "Cut consumption by 30% or we fine you thousands of dollars."

Of course, now they have more fresh water than they know what to do with since the desal plant came online. But the trees are gone.
