OK now I get it. Took awhile as the synapsis don’t fire as quickly as they used to but givvum enough time and eventually they do!

Good one Greger. Gotta git me one of them T shirts.

Looks like Irma is headed for Key West. At least that's where most of the models put it. Storm surge of 11-13 feet.

Problem is that Key West has only 7 feet of elevation at it's highest. So the surge will put water over the entire island, plus the waves on top of that water.

Everyone should evacuate and don't expect any structure to be standing when they come back. If they CAN come back. Bridges between keys may be down for months. I wouldn't be too surprised if they have to survey the whole island to find out were the old parcel boundaries are.

Don't try to ride this one out. Key West will not be survivable if Irma doesn't turn away. All evacuation hold-outs will be dead.

Now the models predict it goes up the east coast of Florida. Even if it does that, Key West may not survive. Pack up anything you want to keep and head north, before it's too late. The bridges out the Keys probably won't all survive, and if just one gives out you're stuck there. If you are in a car on the Keys when Irma goes by, you WILL drown.

I'm not even sure where you can go: All of Southern Florida is pretty damned flat and pretty damned low. People will have plenty of opportunity to drown if they are stuck in traffic jams while evacuating in Southern Florida. Even when you get further North, the land is flat you could be flooded out from the rain.

Get ready for some major chuckles:

Rush Says Irma is a Big Conspiracy to Sell Batteries and Bottled Water

Of course he also blames Liberals because they need big hurricanes to sell their Climate Change nonsense.

From the looks of the latest predictions Florida is pretty much fecked. Have I mentioned that I live in a flood plain?

Floods are pretty common here, almost an annual event. I figure it would take a real humdinger of a storm to actually flood my house.
Trouble is...this is one real humdinger of a storm.

Maybe you should get a raft together, just in case. I see some predictions put Irma right up the middle of the state and it's wider than the state.

The big problem with floods (well, other than drowning) is the water supply is gone. Everything depends on electricity, so when that goes out there are no pumps working. You can live a long time without food, but one day without water is serious. And all the flood water contains sewage. Throw some water jugs in the raft.

No, I'm dead in the middle of completely fvcked. Near Orlando.
Shouldn't really be too bad here, I'm nowhere near the coast.

Except Irma is huge. I just saw a composite image and Irma is twice the diameter of Andrew. If she really comes straight up the middle of the state, the wind probably won't be too bad if you board up or put up some shutters. But the potential for flooding is very high. Maybe not "above the roof" high, but certainly "water in your house" high.

I was reading about the relative energy of stuff the other day and something like 99% of the energy of hurricanes is used to lift water (which come down as rain) and only 1% is in the winds.

At least make sure you have a ladder well-secured so you can get up on the roof when the storm passes.

Highest I've seen the water here in 35 years was 16 inches below my floor. I have an untested theory that, because the land is so flat, The water will spread out rather than rise much higher.
I live on the edge of the Green Swamp, 800 square miles of sparsely populated swampland. But it's a "high" swamp that drains out into five major rivers and a few small creeks like the one I live on. Water doesn't collect here but it can stack up a little on its way out.
I will likely be trapped out here for a few days without power or water after the storm, I've got a well so, like you mentioned...no power, no water. There's three miles of unpaved road to get out of here that will likely be flooded or blocked by fallen trees. It aint my first hurricane and likely won't be my last. It may well be my worst, but I know what I'm in for. It's gonna be ugly. Everything that will hold water will be filled tomorrow.
Rural areas like this are the last places they restore power to, so I'm in it for the long haul. I've got a generator, lots of food and...

Jeez it's gonna be ugly. But not life threatening.

I've got a 4x4 truck with a winch, a generator, and more than one chainsaw, and my place is only on the edge of the suburbs. Hurricanes are just tropical depressions by the time they get up here and we are up on a hill, so all we have to worry about is humidity.

Wild fire season is coming, though.

Serious question:

Any ideas of what would have happened in a nuclear bomb was dropped in the middle of Irma's eye while at sea? Hmm

I don't know what it would do in the short run, but in the long run maybe a few million cases of cancer? There would still be a lot of wind to spread the fallout.

If you dropped it in the eye, I would think it just super-heats the air and add energy to the hurricane. You might get the equivalent of a Category 6 or 7.

I was thinking in terms that the device would break-up the structure of the hurricane.

Well, I'm back online. It wandered a bit east rather than further west as I expected so I got slammed pretty good. Surrounding forest kept most of the wind over my head and the flooding was within the normal range and well below my floor. Four days without power, water, or phone were uncomfortable but not too bad once the generator was running and my (rather massive) store of food was safely refrigerated and frozen rather than packed on ice.
Here's a heartwarming rescue story with a (possibly) tragic ending...

The morning after the storm I drove out the dirt road to see how things looked, at first it looked totally normal, all the skinny little pine trees I expected to be down were still standing and the road was clear without any debris to speak of. Then about a half mile out the road just disappeared. A wall of fallen trees blocked it completely. That was as far as I was going until a crew with chainsaws got it cleared. On the way back I saw something move on the road, turned out to be a catfish, maybe 300 feet from the little lake he probably lived in. I had just fed the chickens and had a bucket with me so I scooped him up, brought him back home and dumped him in my creek. One lucky catfish. But the next day, sitting with my neighbors at the breakfast nook looking out on the flooded back yard, there was a Great Blue Heron wading on my(former) lawn. Sure enough, he scooped up a catfish about the same size and swallowed it as we watched. One not so lucky catfish.

On the other hand, you did manage to feed a Great Blue Heron! It's just the great circle of life, my friend. At least you didn't get out the frying pan and have the catfish for dinner.

Glad you made it through okay.

Power went out again four hours ago, internet still up so I'm running computer on generator. Doesn't look like it's gonna get fixed tonight so I've gotta hook up the fridge and freezer to generator again.
A wicked little thunderstorm came through and knocked it and there's no telling how long before someone gets back out here in the swamp to fix it.

Nobody in their right minds give a fig about you and your Florida, Gregor. I mean--you live in the middle of a sand spit humans have no right occupying. Get a mountain or something.

So the next time the winds show up you will have enough altitude to rip your roof off!

Now that the wind's died down they have to deal with the BIG problem: The whole Southern half of the state is covered with a layer of poop from the floods. Not that a whole lot of poop is anything new there. The whole Southern half of the state is so low that sewers don't really work very well. Not enough fall. So many many sewage treatment plants overflowed and sewer pipes burst. Anyway, they are listing all the diseases you can get from wading around in the flood water: Not pretty.

Last time I was there I could just feel it. I had to get down to the Conch Republic to feel normal. But then we took a dive boat day trip out to snorkel. We went about 20 miles out and the bottom was absolutely covered in silt? poop? something? I felt like I was snorkeling in somebody's toilet.

Having been to your corner of the Swamp, Greger, I can imagine what you're dealing with. I had enough trouble getting there on a clear day with modern transportation. I've now heard from my Florida friends in virtually every corner of the State. Friends on both coasts are without power, and two are dealing with flood damage. (It's hard to imagine any part of the State not flooding.). All, however, made it through. And now the work at home begins. It'll be a long slog I don't envy you.

Greger, I sure am glad you made it through relatively unscathed but I have to ask:
Where do you think your home-spread will be a decade from now?
My gut tells me it's largely going to be underwater about half the time...either that or you will discover that you now live on an island in the middle of nowhere.

Anyway, I sure do hope the power crews and chainsaw jockeys get to you before the gators do.

I'm on pretty high ground actually, Jeffery, about 128 feet above sea level, so I expect it will be exactly like it is now, and was a decade ago, a century ago, thousands of years ago when natives lived, hunted, and fished around here.
The water here has been designated outstanding and it's a recharge area for the Floridan Aquifer and the source of the Clermont chain of lakes.
The water running through my back yard right now will ultimately find its way into the St. Johns River and eventually into the Atlantic up around Jacksonville.
Near as I can tell it's mostly the coastal areas worldwide that are pretty much fecked.

Plenty high until Antarctica and Greenland melt, and you (and your grandkids) will be long gone before that. Some of these things are really multi-generational problems.

The real problem is that lots of Florida is so flat that it can take a long time for storm water to get back to the ocean. Not a problem around here. Lots of hills, mesas, and seasonal river valleys. Just don't build anything in the dry riverbed and you won't get washed away when it fills bank to bank after a big rain every few years.

Some towns are flat, some are hilly. most have lots of lakes the storm water runs into. My county, aptly named Lake County, has over 1000 lakes that cover about 200 square miles. Water and storms aren't a new thing here so all towns have adequate storm drainage and water retention ponds to deal with all but the heaviest rainfall. The coastal areas are all pretty flat and they've got storm surge to deal with during a hurricane. That's where the flooding takes place here, it's not generally a problem further inland unless you live on one of the many rivers and streams that might overflow their banks like the one in my back yard. Really, flooding is seldom an issue here.

Years ago I represented the military department of the state, which included the emergency management division. I had access to the planning/assessment program which had overlays of the various natural disaster threats facing the state. Out of curiosity, I put my address in and applied the overlays one by one: flood, wind, Pyroclastic flow from Mount Rainier, earthquakes... it turns out, mine is literally the safest house in the neighborhood... and the city! It was the only one not affected by any of the overlays. A single white spot in a sea of colors. Ironic, no?

Last night on Real Time, Bill Maher flipped the script on Trump and his ahole supporters and now it's Liberals who want 'states rights' - leave our pesticide free-clean state and our sanctuary cities alone! And, quit taking down our solar panels and quit trying to segregate our bathrooms!

It's pretty awesome. You gotta watch.

Not to mention Jeff Sessions and his Reefer Madness approach to medical marijuana. I think he's going to throw a fit when Congress finally passes a bill to decriminalize it federally.

"Good people don't smoke marijuana."

Except of course for all those cancer and AIDs victims, kids with seizure disorders, vets with PTSD, and so on. They think about 2.6 million of people would be medical marijuana users when all states legalize it. Hey Jeff, you're getting up into holocaust territory there!

About 12 years ago, three hurricanes hit Florida. I lost power for a week to ten days during each of them. There is a particularly swampy little area my power line runs through a mile or so away where there had been a little forest fire the year before and there were a bunch of dead trees just poised and waiting for a stiff breeze to clip the line.
They did and it took a swamp buggy machine to get out there and make repairs. Then there was nothing for over ten years. Last year Hurricane Mathew brushed by the state and caused a little flooding here but I never lost power.
It wouldn't shock or surprise me if we get hit by another one. Overpopulation in, and over-development of, the coastal regions, particularly swampy south Florida, which is just a bunch of drained swamps and never should have been developed in the first place, makes these storms a lot more devastating than they should be.
They blow through, they make news, they ruin lives, then it's on to the next natural disaster.

Exactly the way I feel about it. If they wanted to develop it to begin with they should have dredged up way more swamp and sand bars to make some land a few dozen feet above sea level, then built on that. Hurricanes would be no problem if your land was 40 feet above sea level.

Of course, you could say the same thing about Southern Texas and Louisiana. The fact that lots of New Orleans is below sea level is just insane. The should just put everything up on pilings and let the water in. The new Venice. Take your boat to work.

You don't hear much about it and there's not nearly as much development over on the west coast. That's because a lot of it looks like this...

Apparently the governor said 95% of the roofs on the island are gone, including his at the Governor's Residence. I think he was actually in the house when the roof came off. He tweeted something like: "I am exposed to the hurricane. House is flooding."

I was thinking that Kim guy doesn't speak English very well.

My bad.

There really is the word dotard. It means:

Quote:
An old person, especially one who has become weak or senile.

Oh snap!

Dotard

In keeping with the Elton John theme set by "Rocket Man," Andy Borowitz wrote that Kim Jong Un called Trump "Honky Cat." I love Borowitz's satire.

The Washington Post reports that dotard meant "imbecile" when it was first used in the 14th century and comes from the Middle English word "doten," meaning "to dote," according to Merriam-Webster.

"It was used by Chaucer in 'The Canterbury Tales,' and it appeared numerous times in William Shakespeare's work, including 'The Merchant of Venice' and 'King Lear," the Post says.

"J.R.R. Tolkien was also fond of 'dotard,' which was a popular pejorative in literature and beyond. The word was used to insult Martin Van Buren, who preceded Trump in the White House by about 175 years, and by Union Army Gen. George McClellan to describe his Civil War predecessor, Gen. Winfield Scott, whom he did not like."

Donald Trump has united the NFL: Ravens/Jaguars; and the NBA. He's unleashed a monster, and it's going to bite hard. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes an impetus for entire teams to kneel. I know I would, and I spent 30 years in uniform.

I know he likes to pick fights with everybody, but this times I think he's gone too far. Attacking the NFL and the NBA is going to lose him a considerable portion of his base. What's next? WWE and NASCAR?

President Dotard Bum?

By 2020, a certain political figure may have collected titles as long and convoluted as those that graced the Habsburg dynasty.

Emperor of Austria, Apostolic King of Hungary, King of Bohemia, of Dalmatia, of Croatia, of Slavonia, of Galicia, of Lodomeria, and of Illyria, King of Jerusalem, and so forth, Archduke of Austria, Grand Duke of Tuscany and of Cracow, Duke of Lorraine, of Salzburg, of Styria, of Carinthia, of Carniola and of the Bukovina, Grand Prince of Transylvania, Margrave in Moravia, Duke of Upper and Lower Silesia, of Modena, Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla, of Auschwitz and Zator, of Teschen, Friuli, Ragusa and Zara, Princely Count of Habsburg and Tyrol, of Kyburg, Gorizia and Gradisca, Prince of Trient and Brixen, Margrave of Upper and Lower Lusatia and in Istria, Count of Hohenems, Feldkirch, Bregenz, Sonnenberg, and so forth, Lord of Trieste, of Cattaro and of the Wendish Mark, Grand Voivode of the Voivodship of Serbia, and so forth, Sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece

Apparently Mr. Trump has never heard of "The Streisand Effect".

Kaepernick taking a knee was never about disrespecting the flag, or the anthem, or the United States.
It wasn't....EVER.
It was about taking a stand against issues which he felt impacted him as a black man, and it was about his fellow persons of color.
It was about his perception, a perception widely held, of injustice. It was about his right to express his opinion of those injustices.
It was about giving voice to all those who feel that they HAVE NO voice.
And taking a knee is not "giving the finger".
When you get on one knee, or two, it is not a sign of disrespect, it's a sign of humility, a sign of grief, a sign of PRAYER.

But now, it is so much more than that, thanks to President Donald Trump!
President Donald Trump decided that this issue was about demanding loyalty and FEALTY TO HIM, to Donald Trump, and Donald Trump's perceptions of the world, perceptions which describe WHITE NATIONALISTS as "very fine people", and NFL players as "sons of bitches".
And by doing this, he has also dragged the MOTHERS of these players into it because by association, they are now "BITCHES" who welped these people which he views as lower than dogs.
And by doing this, Donald Trump has laid down with his own dogs, and he has caught a monumental case of fleas.
So, this is no longer just an issue of protesting injustice.
Oh no, now this is about Donald Trump...Donald Trump the bully.
And I sincerely hope and pray that the entire National Football League takes a knee if only to let President Donald Trump know that he is NOT A KING.

Don't get your hopes up about any noticeable backlash regarding the president's stance on athletes "taking a knee". It appears that 40% of Americans are racist at heart, nothing is going to change that in the foreseeable future. He knows exactly what his base wants and every time he opens his mouth, or Twitter account, he is speaking directly to them. The rest of America can go straight to Hell.

Very true Greger. As far as Trump is concerned he is the President only of his base. The rest of the Americans can go straight to hell. They aren’t “real Americans” anyway, so they don't matter.

And his base loves him all the more because of that.
