The Los Angeles City Council voted on Wednesday to replace the Columbus Day holiday in October with Indigenous Peoples Day...

Supporters of the plan argued that Christopher Columbus' connection to brutality and slavery makes him no longer worthy of celebration...

Of course, the illustration is the Aztec's practice of cutting a beating heart out of a sacrifice. We are not even sure if these were enemies or honorees! Anyway, the Aztecs were down in what is known as Mexico today. Nothing like the pretty mellow California native people. I don't recall any mention of human sacrifice among them.

In fact, there wasn't even much resistance to Spanish priests coming in and setting up big plantations. The tribes not interested in mission life just kept on migrating between mountains in summer and coastal areas in winter, hunting and gathering. Maybe a little agriculture here and there. Gold rush. Now casinos! We all love their casinos, mostly because of the buffets. I've even been to a pow wow east of San Diego. Pretty traditional costumes, drumming, singing, dancing. Interesting food. What's not to like?

Actually, if you want to do something for Native American people: Stock the god-damned tampon dispenser in their public school's girl's bathrooms! I just read something the other day about Native American girls having to skip school because they have their periods and can't afford feminine hygiene products. They skip so much they fall behind and eventually have to drop out. All because we don't have the decency to keep those dispensers filled.

Honestly, I'm thinking of changing my will. I could do far worse than contributing to this. There should be a foundation set up just to buy plugs for these machines.

How about the fact that he never actually set foot on mainland America?
The entire myth was cooked up by Washington Irving.

The United States of America has, basically, fewer national holidays that most other countries. This being the case one can only wonder why they just don't pick an unused date instead of pissing off the Italian community - it just makes no sense! I know, this is local but its kindofa movement. Just pick an unused date and give it to the Indigenous People and leave the Italian/Columbus thing alone!

Oh, I am not of Italian heritage but I have a daughter in law that is and she is not a happy camper over this one.

Columbus "discovered" some Caribbean islands. Of course, there were already people there who wouldn't say he discovered anything. More like he enslaved and killed everybody. But of course, they weren't White Europeans so they didn't count.

I don't think he ever set foot on the continent of North America. I'm not sure why we should celebrate this guy.

Pretty sure the Asian migrants who crossed the Russia-Alaska land bridge "discovered" America. smile

Not the point. The Italians consider Columbus Day to be theirs, Saint Patric's Day is for the Irish, and Meicans have Cinco De Mayo. I am in favor of EVERY nationality to have their day! I also think its silly and offensive to take one away from one group and assign it to another, just plain bad manners.

I see your point. Seems stupid to just offend some group. But Columbus was particularly offensive to other groups like Native Americans. They should have changed Columbus Day to Leonardo Da Vinci Day.
