How America Lost Its Mind

The nation’s current post-truth moment is the ultimate expression of mind-sets that have made America exceptional throughout its history.

This month's Atlantic Magazine has an interesting article on America's culture of insanity. I don't fully subscribe to the author's view of the 1960's, but he is pretty good on the present Trump era.

Quote:
Donald Trump is a grifter driven by resentment of the establishment. He doesn’t like experts, because they interfere with his right as an American to believe or pretend that fictions are facts, to feel the truth. He sees conspiracies everywhere. He exploited the myths of white racial victimhood. His case of what I call Kids R Us syndrome—spoiled, impulsive, moody, a 71-year-old brat—is acute.

He is, first and last, a creature of the fantasy-industrial complex. “He is P. T. Barnum ..."

I really like that term, "The Fantasy-Industrial Complex", I must remember it.

The very best salesmen are those that firmly believe in the product they are selling. Since Trump seems to believe everything that Trump says ...............

I once hired a woman who had a husband who was the head of a fed prison. She told me that after somebody spends 20 years in prison they have been so conditioned to lie, and believe their lie when stated, that they are, quite possibly, the best liars in the world. She told me that she was working in a prison post office and, once, a prisoner convinced her that he was pregnant even though she knew that could not be. In other words 20+ prisoners are not only liars but GREAT sales folk. I suspect the only difference between Trump and the prisoner is that he has had at least 20 years practice in lying and so is probably at least approaching master liar/salesman status.

George Orwell dealt with this in 1984. The Inner Party members were the ones who believed their own brainwashing lies the most fervently.

We see this with the Koch Bros., De Vos's, Scaife's, and other billionaire Oligarchs.

I think the biggest difference is that those billionaire oligarchs believe a whole bunch of stuff that isn't true. They want to implement their ideas but none of these guys is an economist. Their ideas put them at the top of a feudal society, but the Age of Kings is long past. They would just end up brutal dictators in a grindingly oppressive regime, until they were overthrown by the forces of democracy. Lots of blood would be shed on both sides.

Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, is very much an establishment centrist. Socially liberal and economically very much in tune with the system as it is.

And welcome to ReaderRant, Nosf50.
