Last month, in the spirit of the season, the opener dealt with Independence. Something the people of Catalonia are voting on today: Catalan independence referendum in chaos as police clash with voters - CNN. The independent spirit of Catalans has been a mainstay of their culture for centuries, despite efforts since the 15th Century to suppress that - just ask Francisco Franco! History of Catalonia - Wikipedia. So this month I'd like to explore independence's cousin, Freedom. So, ...
Welcome to the Round Table for October 2017.

Freedom, as our founders recognized, comes in many forms. They outlined a few in the Bill of Rights. It's the tradition of the First Amendment's "Freedom of Speech" that prompts NFL players to "Take a knee" during the national anthem. It's the same freedom that allows the President to abuse them via twitter... although he has a tendency toward suppressing that right whenever his autocratic heart feels the urge (incessantly?). It was this freedom that allowed and prompted Thomas Paine to pen Common Sense before our own revolution.

Joined with the Freedom of Speech are freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion, the last being a tradition that Martin Luther is best remembered for - along with hammer and nails, and trips to the hardware store... In the coming days our commitment to the concept of religious liberty will be sorely challenged if the theocrat from Alabama ascends to the Senate... Roy Moore, Christian Theocrat.

Sometimes freedom takes a more literal form. O.J. Simpson was just released after serving 9 years in Nevada prison. In his case, however, there are some strings attached. Sometimes, however, that freedom is dearly bought - ask Iva Toguri D'Aquino, wrongfully imprisoned as "Tokyo Rose" - but really for being Japanese American - and not pardoned until 1977; or the other Martin Luther - the Junior King.

But sometimes the act of oppression amplifies the words of the oppressed. So it is with the Catalans, who's democratic instincts are being fought tooth and nail by the Spanish government; so it is with the members of the National Football League, who have risen, or really, knelt, in solidarity after being twitterly accosted by the President on behalf of his "base"; and so it was with Martin Luther King, Jr., whose Letter from Birmingham Jail became a founding document of nonviolent resistance throughout the nation, and is perhaps one of the greatest examples of the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution.

A quick note. Capitol Hill Blue turns 23 today. An offer by my Internet Service Provider (ISP) for 5 mb of free web space on Oct. 1, 1994 spawned a then-weekly column about goings on in and around Capitol Hill.

For reasons I cannot remember, I called it "Capitol Hill Blue." It may have been a reference to what I saw as the widespread of political pornography in Washington. Hell, I don't remember (but at age 69 I don't remember a lot.

A lot, however, has happened over the years and we keep moving along and I thank you folks here at RR for your hard work in keeping this forum running. Each year about this time I start wondering if it is time to pull the plug on CHB. Nah. I'm having too much fun and there is too much madness in the swamp called DC.

CHB went daily on Jan. 1, 1995 and -- except for my cow-motorcycle encounter in 2012 -- has been on the web continually.

We've lost good friends over the year. Donna's passing still troubles me. I wish I could be with you folks here more and perhaps I can in the coming year. I'm still working full-time (and more) as a contract reporter and photographer for BHMedia, which means I'm a contractor for Warren Buffett, who owns Berkshire-Hathaway. Unlike another billionaire we know, Mr. Buffett actually pays his vendors and does so promptly.

As age slows me down, I find recovering from mishaps take longer. My near-fatal motorcycle accident in 2012 still requires therapy each week and another motorcycle accident last Thursday leaves a list of scrapes and bruises (called road rash in biker lingo) and a bruised rib cage but I'm a lot better off than I was when my Harley encountered a black steer on a dark night in November 2012. This time it was a dog in the daytime.

Will I keep riding? Probably. For the time being, it will be with Amy's three-wheeled Can Am Spyder while my Switchback is being repaired.

Enough dribble from me. Thank you again for all your help. Phil, Ponderer and the others are much appreciated and please let me know if you need anything. Blue will be moving to a new, enhanced server at the end of the year. Keeping up with the Trump circus has been good for our traffic and God knows where this will all end.

Happy Birthday to CHB and, one again, thank you. Without you, CHB will not still be "comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable."

Doug

How to identify a white supremacist: ask them if they'd be ok if their grand-daughter made a baby with a black man

It outs them every, single time. LOL

Those boys should contact the ACLU: SC decided YEARS ago that your freedom of speech does not stop at the schoolhouse door. Of course, their coach is a bit confused: Taking a knee has NOTHING to do with the military. It's about Black men being murdered by the police for the crime of being Black. That coach has some splaining to do, if he wants to keep his job!

I've realized that there are two things that reliably explain every move by Der Trump: First, how does it affect him?; second, will it punish minorities? It's no mistake that the fight with the NFL is directed at a league that is 70+% black, nor that Puerto Rico is mostly Hispanic. Florida and Texas get a pass because they have Republican governors, period. It also explains the health care plan and the tax cut plans, which are both designed to hurt "blue" States (that didn't elect Trump) and advantage GOP States.

The coach isn't confused, he's a white supremacist who is using the military as a ruse to deny those student athletes their first amendment rights.

UPDATE: This happened in Crosby, TX , not Crowley, TX. I linked the story.

I forgot to mention this happened at a "Christian" school as well. The coach is a paster, as well as being former military.

Indeed, the GOP's last Repeal and Replace absolutely was all about hurting blue states.

It was pretty much a means for Republicans to accept Medicaid expansion without accepting Obama's Medicaid expansion.

Remember that? All they had to do was say yes. But many Republican Governors did not, thus murdering many poor people and guaranteeing their own special place in Hell. I guess all these supposed "Good Christians" actually worship Satan.

I think you overshot a little, how about if their daughter/granddaughter just dated or HAD SEX with a black man...or just had a very very close friend who was a black man?

Any of those is guaranteed to elicit at least an eye twitch in their supremacist lymph nodes.

HHS just decided that the Hobby Lobby and Little Sisters free birth control doctrine applies to any corporation that objects to birth control for any reason. (Although I'm not sure how a stockholder-owned corporation can have religious or philosophical beliefs. Do they hold a shareholder's election?)

I doubt this will decrease the amount of screwing, but it certainly will increase the number of abortions!

Good job, guys! Law of Unintended Consequences strikes again.

Speaking of Harvey Milk:

Rick, are you familiar with Frank M. Robinson? He was a speechwriter for Harvey Milk. He was also the author of the classic science fiction novel, The Power, one of my favorites, which was made into a good, but unfortunately not great, movie.

Hurricane Ophelia (no known association with William Shakespeare) has arrived in Great Britain, traveling up the west side of the islands. It will be interesting to compare the disaster response to the efforts of the Trump administration in Puerto Rico. I should note, however, that I think that the current FEMA administrator is competent, if overwhelmed at the magnitude of the disasters on his watch. Nonetheless, the lack of leadership at the top is definitely inhibiting recovery efforts.

Last week I heard about Trump saying that he was going to meet the President of the Virgin Islands.

Tonight I saw the actual video. Trump said:

Quote:
I went to Puerto Rico and I met the President of the Virgin Islands.

Does this guy realize what a moron he is? Seriously!!!!! mad

First of all, sir, you did not meet 'the President of the Virgin Islands' because you ARE the President of the Virgin Islands. Why do you lie so much?!?!!!

Secondly, how you just stand there in front of a microphone and blithely announce that you "met the President of the Virgin Islands?"

C'mon!!!! Can this man stop lying for even five minutes?!?!!! Damn he's an idiot.

(Gawd that man gets me riled-up. crazy )

Ok, rant over. smile

Senator John McCain's speech to the Liberty Medal Award Ceremony.

He may be a "Wacko bird" at times, but I sure do appreciate him in these times of extremest politics.

Holy crap, how did Weinstein ever get any movie producing done?

Many many women harrassed or attacked

Dozens of women he hit on VERY crudely. Like walking out of the bathroom naked and rampant, crude. What I wonder is how many times this actually worked? Or maybe "working" was not the point because he is an exhibitionist and gets off on grossing women out.

You should see what it's like in the ad agency world.
The shocking thing is, in the ad agencies there's a bit more equality in terms of who your harassers are.
If you want to wind up as a Joe Gillis, it might just happen if you're down far enough
on the food chain in an ad agency. Attractive or unattractive, there are many more powerful women who will attempt to manipulate your future prospects up or down depending on how you service them.
The glass ceiling is still very much in place in the big movie studios, less so at the ad agencies.

I was Joe Gillis...for about two weeks

Yes, of course many men will rationalize about it more if their harasser is attractive but let's face it, not only is that just pure dumb luck but, even if they are, at some point you still get sick of their sh!t, and once you do, you're out.

I got hired at a major ad agency in Santa Monica as a courier/gopher, then suddenly found myself promoted to TV series trailer editor.
I edited the trailers and promos for "The Thornbirds" because a mightily distasteful beast decided I was to service her.
She made it clear in no uncertain terms that more opportunities would become available should I continue laying the pipe, something I could not stand doing after about the third time.
Thornbirds trailer done, I was unceremoniously fired, not even welcome to go back to being a gopher, I was just out, period.
Worst part, she was a best friend to one of my roommates.

Q: How are Dodger fans like Trump's visit to Puerto Rico?

A: Both show up late, and leave early.

Speaking of Dodgers...

...it is so assumed that the Dodgers will when the World Series, that the Dodgers have already declined to visit the White House.

All due respect Rick, I would have given an unequivocal NO.
As I was young and naive, I really didn't know she had anything like this in mind...until it became crystal clear that she did.

It wasn't pleasant in any sense of the word, not any sense of the word, and I was stupid enough to think it was all just an accidental slip in judgment. I even questioned my OWN judgment, wondering momentarily if I HAD mistakenly lent myself to this scheme.
All doubts went away very quickly soon after.

I was considering dressing-up as a Trump supporter for Halloween. I have decided against it, because I don't think that I can get my head that far up my ass. coffee

On this date in 1983, a suicide bomber attacked the US Marine barracks at Beirut International Airport. They drove a truck loaded with 2000 lbs of explosives, killing 241 servicemen.

And strangely, no Benghazi style rounds of endless investigations.

Another day, another round of trillion dollar cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, and another assault on our retirement pensions from the rabid killers on the Right.
Programs that we pay for with our taxes and hard work are now being referred to as "FREE STUFF" by the Right.
People who PAY their TAXES and contribute their INCOME to PAY for these programs are now being called "moochers, takers and freeloaders" who "failed to make wise decisions for their retirement".

And, do Democrats fight back against these smear campaigns?
Nope, not at all. In fact, not even the well funded Democratic think tanks bother to devote so much as a nickel to counter the tsunami of propaganda from the Kochs, Peter G. Petersen or any of the other skilled mouthpieces on the Right.
All we get are quiet platitudes mumbled from the pursed lips of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, when what we need is fire, opera, fat and blood, fortified by backbone and muscle.
This is why Democrats suffer from "electile dysfunction".

More than half your post is about Democrats, though they are not the ones doing this horrible stuff. I seem to recall an election where they lost the Senate, the House, and the office of President. So it's not like they COULD do much other than bitch and moan. When they do win back some majority somewhere, I expect they will just undo a lot of this crap.

Maybe you should spend more time complaining about the actual bad guys here, and less about the opposition's tactic of quietly letting the bad guys own all their own blunders.

And cutting Medicare is a major blunder: What do you think AARP is going to do in the 2018 election cycle?

When?
In order for them to win, they have to first remember HOW to win.
Sorry but the reason they're in this position is mostly self-inflicted wounds, and what isn't self inflicted consists of wounds suffered from showing up to a gun fight singing kumbaya and carrying a cub scout knife, to cut their shoelaces, which they keep tripping over.

I'm even hearing fellow liberals singing the praises today about impassioned speeches by Jeff Flake and Bob Corker, speeches about how Trump has debased America and introduced a fact free new normal.
The problem is, it's all talk and no action, because when the radical Right Trumpians wanted to kill off the key legislation that drives the CFPB, they voted for it, and Pence cast the tie-breaker.

Quote:
"Both Sens. Corker and Flake, along with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., joined in the effort to give Trump a major win, even if it will hurt many of his own voters. Consumer advocates had hoped that moderate Republicans Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine would block the GOP effort. They did not."

AFTER DAY OF FEUDING, JEFF FLAKE AND BOB CORKER JOIN TRUMP TO UPEND A MAJOR CONSUMER PROTECTION

In molester terms, they'll make impassioned speeches all day long about how evil molesters are but when the molester needs more nine year old girls, they'll be right there with the cherry tarts.

And yet Democrats think they should cheer Corker and Flake?
Where are the speeches by leading Democrats?
Sorry but I just don't see anything that inspires me yet and the truth is, experts are already predicting a Trump victory in 2020 AND another Right wing supermajority in both houses of Congress in 2018.

If we do not utterly destroy the right wing majorities in both Houses of Congress in 2018, we're finished, and democracy is finished.
If we repeat the same apathy as the 2010 and 2014 mid terms, it's all over. It will not end with a bang, it will end with a whimper.

If we get another right wing supermajority in 2018, that will signal permission to all the extremist groups to go full bore on their plans to unleash whatever chaos and havoc they see fit.

If...?? I think "when" is perhaps more appropriate. But don't be alarmed, it's just going to take a little longer than two years for this thing to come off the tracks.

On today's bill, it was all about a new rule that had not gone into effect yet: It said that consumers can't sign away their right to be part of a class action lawsuit. They have to participate in arbitration if it is in the contract fine print. Which has been true for a long time.

But if arbitration doesn't work out you can always turn up at the company share holder meeting and start shooting executives. You deny justice in court, and it will end up on the street. People who feel that they have been screwed over enough by some company are pretty good at getting their own justice.

There are actually a lot of Republican ideas that have this ultimate response, and they are silly if they don't consider them. For example, you take away 23 million people's health insurance and there will be an unending stream of grieving fathers coming to Washington or even your hometown office to kill you.

(This is not a threat: I have no kids and will do fine no matter what they do. It's an observation.)

Manafort, Gates surrender to Mueller, source says - CNN. Nothing surprising here, except the scope of the tax fraud. I just heard part of the indictment read on air. Money laundering to the tune of tens of millions, $75 million in undisclosed income.

Richard Gates may prove the more important figure here. He was Manafort's Deputy, but, more importantly, was still working for Trump after Manafort was fired. He headed his Super PAC until March of this year, and was part of the transition team. Leverage and knowledge are a potent combination.
