Last month, in the spirit of the season, the opener dealt with Independence. Something the people of Catalonia are voting on today: Catalan independence referendum in chaos as police clash with voters - CNN. The independent spirit of Catalans has been a mainstay of their culture for centuries, despite efforts since the 15th Century to suppress that - just ask Francisco Franco! History of Catalonia - Wikipedia. So this month I'd like to explore independence's cousin, Freedom. So, ...
Welcome to the Round Table for October 2017.

Freedom, as our founders recognized, comes in many forms. They outlined a few in the Bill of Rights. It's the tradition of the First Amendment's "Freedom of Speech" that prompts NFL players to "Take a knee" during the national anthem. It's the same freedom that allows the President to abuse them via twitter... although he has a tendency toward suppressing that right whenever his autocratic heart feels the urge (incessantly?). It was this freedom that allowed and prompted Thomas Paine to pen Common Sense before our own revolution.

Joined with the Freedom of Speech are freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion, the last being a tradition that Martin Luther is best remembered for - along with hammer and nails, and trips to the hardware store... In the coming days our commitment to the concept of religious liberty will be sorely challenged if the theocrat from Alabama ascends to the Senate... Roy Moore, Christian Theocrat.

Sometimes freedom takes a more literal form. O.J. Simpson was just released after serving 9 years in Nevada prison. In his case, however, there are some strings attached. Sometimes, however, that freedom is dearly bought - ask Iva Toguri D'Aquino, wrongfully imprisoned as "Tokyo Rose" - but really for being Japanese American - and not pardoned until 1977; or the other Martin Luther - the Junior King.

But sometimes the act of oppression amplifies the words of the oppressed. So it is with the Catalans, who's democratic instincts are being fought tooth and nail by the Spanish government; so it is with the members of the National Football League, who have risen, or really, knelt, in solidarity after being twitterly accosted by the President on behalf of his "base"; and so it was with Martin Luther King, Jr., whose Letter from Birmingham Jail became a founding document of nonviolent resistance throughout the nation, and is perhaps one of the greatest examples of the freedoms enshrined in our Constitution.

A quick note. Capitol Hill Blue turns 23 today. An offer by my Internet Service Provider (ISP) for 5 mb of free web space on Oct. 1, 1994 spawned a then-weekly column about goings on in and around Capitol Hill.

For reasons I cannot remember, I called it "Capitol Hill Blue." It may have been a reference to what I saw as the widespread of political pornography in Washington. Hell, I don't remember (but at age 69 I don't remember a lot.

A lot, however, has happened over the years and we keep moving along and I thank you folks here at RR for your hard work in keeping this forum running. Each year about this time I start wondering if it is time to pull the plug on CHB. Nah. I'm having too much fun and there is too much madness in the swamp called DC.

CHB went daily on Jan. 1, 1995 and -- except for my cow-motorcycle encounter in 2012 -- has been on the web continually.

We've lost good friends over the year. Donna's passing still troubles me. I wish I could be with you folks here more and perhaps I can in the coming year. I'm still working full-time (and more) as a contract reporter and photographer for BHMedia, which means I'm a contractor for Warren Buffett, who owns Berkshire-Hathaway. Unlike another billionaire we know, Mr. Buffett actually pays his vendors and does so promptly.

As age slows me down, I find recovering from mishaps take longer. My near-fatal motorcycle accident in 2012 still requires therapy each week and another motorcycle accident last Thursday leaves a list of scrapes and bruises (called road rash in biker lingo) and a bruised rib cage but I'm a lot better off than I was when my Harley encountered a black steer on a dark night in November 2012. This time it was a dog in the daytime.

Will I keep riding? Probably. For the time being, it will be with Amy's three-wheeled Can Am Spyder while my Switchback is being repaired.

Enough dribble from me. Thank you again for all your help. Phil, Ponderer and the others are much appreciated and please let me know if you need anything. Blue will be moving to a new, enhanced server at the end of the year. Keeping up with the Trump circus has been good for our traffic and God knows where this will all end.

Happy Birthday to CHB and, one again, thank you. Without you, CHB will not still be "comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable."

Doug

White supremacists are using the military to place their boot on the necks of those exercising their first amendment right. These white supremacists are sickening. mad

These same aholes use their faux outrage of mistreatment of gays by radical Islamists - then go back to bashing gays once their ire with radical Islamists simmers down. Hmm

How to identify a white supremacist: ask them if they'd be ok if their grand-daughter made a baby with a black man

It outs them every, single time. LOL

Those boys should contact the ACLU: SC decided YEARS ago that your freedom of speech does not stop at the schoolhouse door. Of course, their coach is a bit confused: Taking a knee has NOTHING to do with the military. It's about Black men being murdered by the police for the crime of being Black. That coach has some splaining to do, if he wants to keep his job!

I've realized that there are two things that reliably explain every move by Der Trump: First, how does it affect him?; second, will it punish minorities? It's no mistake that the fight with the NFL is directed at a league that is 70+% black, nor that Puerto Rico is mostly Hispanic. Florida and Texas get a pass because they have Republican governors, period. It also explains the health care plan and the tax cut plans, which are both designed to hurt "blue" States (that didn't elect Trump) and advantage GOP States.

The coach isn't confused, he's a white supremacist who is using the military as a ruse to deny those student athletes their first amendment rights.

UPDATE: This happened in Crosby, TX , not Crowley, TX. I linked the story.

I forgot to mention this happened at a "Christian" school as well. The coach is a paster, as well as being former military.
