Winter is fast approaching in most parts of the country, while some of us are still dealing with a newfangled form of HEAT WAVES.
Even here in Los Angeles, aka La La Land, whodathunk that the last week in October would bring 100+ degree temps to the World Series!

So it is not without a bit of eyerolling that I extend the "warmest welcome" to:

The Reader Rant Roundtable for November, 2017

Winter IS approaching for many at the top, however.
The winter of their discontent is becoming evident in the always chaotic White House as the first flakes of an impending blizzard of indictments fall.
Our President is keeping mum, both when it comes to questions about pardoning Paul Manafort and his options regarding Mueller.

This November also brings us to the first anniversary of the passing of renowned musician and songwriter Leon Russell, who passed away November 13, 2016 at age seventy-four.
Pictured above in all its wintry looking glory is an image from his final opus, "On A Distant Shore", which was released immediately after his death. Leon had been working on it all year long and completed it about a month before his heart attack in August 2016.

NOAA has issued a forecast for a G3 (STRONG) GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH ISSUED FOR 02-03 NOVEMBER and a G2 (MODERATE) WATCH FOR 04 NOVEMBER, so be situationally aware and prepared.
The Royal Astronomical Society met in November 1859 to discuss the major coronal mass ejection (CME) that occurred between August 28 and September 2, 1859.
The solar storm was so strong that telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed, in some cases giving telegraph operators electric shocks. Telegraph pylons threw sparks.[16] Some telegraph operators could continue to send and receive messages despite having disconnected their power supplies.

The storm was classified as a "Carrington Event".

What would be the impact of a similar storm today? According to a 2008 report from the National Academy of Sciences, it could cause “extensive social and economic disruptions” due to its impact on power grids, satellite communications and GPS systems. The potential price tag? Between $1 trillion and $2 trillion.
In other words, it would plunge most of civilization into the mid-19th century all over again.

The veneer of modern life is indeed extremely thin!
So is, as most suspect, the veneer of civilization itself.

November 11th is Veterans Day.
I'll be celebrating it with MY Navy veteran, of course, Engineman 3rd Class Karen Mitchell Haas.
Find a veteran to share with, many of them are as near as your local VA Hospital or clinic.

Pinups for Vets makes regular visits all around the country, visiting men AND women vets and spreading cheer. Yes lady vets, they do have some "beefcake" models who will visit YOU, too.

This month marks the one-year period we have to prepare ourselves for the November 2018 mid-term elections, which may very well alter the course of history, for America and even the world.
As turnout for mid-terms is historically low, particularly among Democratic voters, I am going to make a personal appeal to all who "resist" the current situation to make a difference by actually getting out and voting for change.
I'll be doing outreach work all year long in the coming twelve months and I hope all of you will, too.

Cheers to all, may the force be with you!

The Republican party of Florida held their "Statesman's dinner" [talk about an oxymoron!] last night at Disney's Grand Floridian resort (where I happen to be vacationing). I had managed to avoid the folderol most of the day by staying at the parks, but returned just in time for their reception and dinner in the ballroom. The place was crawling with nametagged participants - pols, lobbyists, spouses - dressed to the nines.

What surprised me was my visceral reaction. I was inordinately and explicitly pissed. I had the urge to get into arguments with every one I bumped into and shout at them for destroying the country and their absolute cowardice and contumely. I only publicly expressed it by singing "teach them how to say goodbye" out loud until I got out of their presence.

This is not an emotion I usually feel, especially on vacation, but I couldn't shake it and it literally kept me up until 3:30 in the morning. I'm still reacting. It drove home to me that this is not just an intellectual frisson, but a deeply ingrained existential crisis. I literally feel under attack, personally. That feeling has just been under the surface. I need to channel that energy before it physically harms me (or someone else).

Congratulations on your restrained response. They haven't actually murdered anybody yet, what with the ACA-killing failure.

Actually Trump's EO not extending the subsidies is killing ACA. Trump has said that ACA has been on "life support" for quite sometime. That was a lie, ACA wasn't - until Trump's very own EO.

We were talking about the Republican politicians at that Florida event. I don't think Trump IS a Republican, a politician, or at the event. He IS a Russian dupe: The only question at this point is unwitting or not.

You Know what would be really useful? If you could tell internet advertisers that you already made a purchase and they might as well stop inundating you with ads for the product that you won't be buying again for years.

I was hunting for some bitty tires for my trailer and I just went to Discount Tire and bought them. I know I'm still going to get tire ads for weeks! Might be worth while having a click button in the add that says: STOP

No, there are six people in your photo. This is a particularly self-interested group of people. At least two of them will make a deal and sell out the others for a reduced sentence.

Democrats might be loyal enough to all go to prison for their guy. Republicans? No way!

Russian Super Yacht Docks In Port Of Palm Beach Ahead Of President Trump’s Visit

The Town of Palm Beach is preparing for President Trump’s Thanksgiving visit to his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Eight miles up the coast, the Port of Palm Beach is hosting another visitor: a mega-yacht owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Palm Beach Post reports Abramovich’s spokesman said the Russian oligarch is not aboard and that the yacht is in town for scheduled maintenance.

---He doesn't HAVE to "be aboard"...he has "people" who can do his bidding for him. Maybe they are a part of the "maintenance crew"?

On a lighter note, a good friend posted a helpful note about what to do if you're a visiting guest using the restroom and you clog the toilet, and there's no plunger.
I'll skip the helpful hint because although he's a nice guy, plungers are cheap.
Our home used to have FOUR bathrooms, but we took two of them and made one really HUGE bathroom, so now we only have three, but even if we had twice as many bathrooms as Aaron Spelling or Paris Hilton, we could still put a plunger in each one.
That's because they cost anywhere between three bucks all the way up to $99.95 for a high-tech compressed air pump powered commercial grade "super-plunger".
I assure you, most of them (about 98%) aren't over six bucks.
So with that in mind, I am not sympathetic to hosts who leave guests stranded when their bowels pack a wallop.
If I'm a guest and they lack a plunger, they get an upper decker.
If I encounter a clog left by the schmuck before me, and they lack a plunger, they get an upper decker. Don't invite guests over and put them on the spot. Your guests will appreciate it and you won't get an upper decker. Plungers are cheap.
Call me a domestic terrorist if you like, but a plunger is pretty basic and leaving someone without one is cruel.
BTW, here's that super duper plunger, it's truly a thing of beauty and an engineering marvel.
Super Duper Compressed Air Plunger

Please tell me someone explained to Trump that the fighter jets are not literally "invisible".
I can accept if he waved off all attempts, I just want to know if someone, anyone, sat down and tried to explain.

My wife and I do. I would think anyone who has watched The Big Bang Theory would have already been hooked by Young Sheldon. It answers a lot of questions of why Sheldon is the way he is. Like last nights episode; Sheldon, rockets, NASA, and that guest spot with the composition book at the end.
