Winter is fast approaching in most parts of the country, while some of us are still dealing with a newfangled form of HEAT WAVES.
Even here in Los Angeles, aka La La Land, whodathunk that the last week in October would bring 100+ degree temps to the World Series!

So it is not without a bit of eyerolling that I extend the "warmest welcome" to:

The Reader Rant Roundtable for November, 2017

Winter IS approaching for many at the top, however.
The winter of their discontent is becoming evident in the always chaotic White House as the first flakes of an impending blizzard of indictments fall.
Our President is keeping mum, both when it comes to questions about pardoning Paul Manafort and his options regarding Mueller.

This November also brings us to the first anniversary of the passing of renowned musician and songwriter Leon Russell, who passed away November 13, 2016 at age seventy-four.
Pictured above in all its wintry looking glory is an image from his final opus, "On A Distant Shore", which was released immediately after his death. Leon had been working on it all year long and completed it about a month before his heart attack in August 2016.

NOAA has issued a forecast for a G3 (STRONG) GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH ISSUED FOR 02-03 NOVEMBER and a G2 (MODERATE) WATCH FOR 04 NOVEMBER, so be situationally aware and prepared.
The Royal Astronomical Society met in November 1859 to discuss the major coronal mass ejection (CME) that occurred between August 28 and September 2, 1859.
The solar storm was so strong that telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed, in some cases giving telegraph operators electric shocks. Telegraph pylons threw sparks.[16] Some telegraph operators could continue to send and receive messages despite having disconnected their power supplies.

The storm was classified as a "Carrington Event".

What would be the impact of a similar storm today? According to a 2008 report from the National Academy of Sciences, it could cause “extensive social and economic disruptions” due to its impact on power grids, satellite communications and GPS systems. The potential price tag? Between $1 trillion and $2 trillion.
In other words, it would plunge most of civilization into the mid-19th century all over again.

The veneer of modern life is indeed extremely thin!
So is, as most suspect, the veneer of civilization itself.

November 11th is Veterans Day.
I'll be celebrating it with MY Navy veteran, of course, Engineman 3rd Class Karen Mitchell Haas.
Find a veteran to share with, many of them are as near as your local VA Hospital or clinic.

Pinups for Vets makes regular visits all around the country, visiting men AND women vets and spreading cheer. Yes lady vets, they do have some "beefcake" models who will visit YOU, too.

This month marks the one-year period we have to prepare ourselves for the November 2018 mid-term elections, which may very well alter the course of history, for America and even the world.
As turnout for mid-terms is historically low, particularly among Democratic voters, I am going to make a personal appeal to all who "resist" the current situation to make a difference by actually getting out and voting for change.
I'll be doing outreach work all year long in the coming twelve months and I hope all of you will, too.

Cheers to all, may the force be with you!

The Republican party of Florida held their "Statesman's dinner" [talk about an oxymoron!] last night at Disney's Grand Floridian resort (where I happen to be vacationing). I had managed to avoid the folderol most of the day by staying at the parks, but returned just in time for their reception and dinner in the ballroom. The place was crawling with nametagged participants - pols, lobbyists, spouses - dressed to the nines.

What surprised me was my visceral reaction. I was inordinately and explicitly pissed. I had the urge to get into arguments with every one I bumped into and shout at them for destroying the country and their absolute cowardice and contumely. I only publicly expressed it by singing "teach them how to say goodbye" out loud until I got out of their presence.

This is not an emotion I usually feel, especially on vacation, but I couldn't shake it and it literally kept me up until 3:30 in the morning. I'm still reacting. It drove home to me that this is not just an intellectual frisson, but a deeply ingrained existential crisis. I literally feel under attack, personally. That feeling has just been under the surface. I need to channel that energy before it physically harms me (or someone else).

Congratulations on your restrained response. They haven't actually murdered anybody yet, what with the ACA-killing failure.

Actually Trump's EO not extending the subsidies is killing ACA. Trump has said that ACA has been on "life support" for quite sometime. That was a lie, ACA wasn't - until Trump's very own EO.

We were talking about the Republican politicians at that Florida event. I don't think Trump IS a Republican, a politician, or at the event. He IS a Russian dupe: The only question at this point is unwitting or not.

You Know what would be really useful? If you could tell internet advertisers that you already made a purchase and they might as well stop inundating you with ads for the product that you won't be buying again for years.

I was hunting for some bitty tires for my trailer and I just went to Discount Tire and bought them. I know I'm still going to get tire ads for weeks! Might be worth while having a click button in the add that says: STOP
