What was feared has happened: Keystone oil pipeline leaks in South Dakota, as Nebraska weighs XL - Reuters.
Quote:
CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - TransCanada Corp (TRP.TO) shut part of its Keystone oil pipeline system after a 5,000-barrel leak in South Dakota, the company said on Thursday, four days before neighboring Nebraska was set to decide on the company’s long-delayed Keystone XL pipeline.
That's 210,000 gallons of oil.

NO

While 5k barrels is relatively high in pipeline incidents, it has or always has been a routine part of pipeline history. And while I abhor the idea of having pipelines running through habitats, I suspect the best efforts will be to target better safety and maintenance.

First, the spill. I think what they were transporting was that foul black tar stuff. They had another spill of that stuff a couple of years ago and they still haven't been able to actually clean it up. This one, I fear, is at least as bad and will take a LONG time to fix as well. This is REALLY bad stuff!

Now they are getting ready to license the new, whiz bang, incredibly safe, no trouble pipeline. Basically, the same promises made about the one that just dumped 210 gallons of black sludge on the land. Dakota (north and south) will deal with the new one in the way they know best. They will license and tax and devil take the consequences because its not their fault!

Basically, Keystone is alive and well and about to be licensed.

I think all they need to do is mix a whole lot of sand and gravel with it, call it asphalt, and repave the nearest interstate with it. That is what asphalt is, after all.
