I've never believed the Magdalene libel, but then, there is much of the Bible that is based up virulent patrimony and deep and abiding misogyny. I am biased toward believing that the scurrilous claims made against Mary M. were instigated out of jealousy - as none are evidenced in the Bible itself - and the Counsel of Nicea was adamant in excising any traditions that didn't adhere to their androcentric belief systems.
