Welcome to the ReaderRant Roundtable for December, 2017

*****

And Welcome To A New Dickensian Age Of Inequality And Gross Economic Injustice

*****

*****

Dallas TX(AP) - A 7 year old boy was at the center of a court room drama yesterday when he challenged the court’s ruling of who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents, and was initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beats him more than his parents, and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he should live with his grandparents, the boy cried and then stated they beat him also.
After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life for them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Dallas Cowboys, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

My family has decided that, while we will exchange gifts and do kindnesses toward others during this holiday season, we will not be celebrating TrumpMas, or Trumpster, or TrumpDependence Day, or TrumpsGiving.
There will be no tree, no lights, no ornaments or tinsel in the house or on the house this year.
The biggest "war on Christmas" we've been able to see is that which Trump has perpetrated on women, on gay, lesbian and trans people, on working people, disabled veterans, the elderly, people of color, immigrants and children.

The best present Americans could possibly give to themselves and to their fellow man is a way out of this national nightmare.

I'm not about to let that fool in the white house change my Yuletide celebrations in any way. There will be a tree, a fire, a feast, and a boot full of carrots on the hearthstone for Sleipnir.

Good pic. He looks like a lizard and he breathes like one, too. And this picture catching him doing one of those little mouth inhales, like he's tasting the air to see if there is any hint of criticism.

If Roy Moore is elected it is an existential threat to the federal system. What it shows, starkly, is that the voters of a single State can poison the entire legislative process. Mind you, that has been true since the creation of the legislature, but what he represents is the reprehensible reality of extremism. The structure of the legislature is inherently unrepresentative, but gerrymandering has exacerbated that circumstance, allowing parties to corrupt the system and put dangerous nutjobs in positions of power. It's a process that has been underway for decades, culminating in the election of Trump.

You're right, though. The only corrective is for people of principle and values to get out and vote, and to run for elective office.

Here's a gem:

Roy Moore Says America Was Great During Slavery

Why, you might ask? Because that was when families were all united.

Well, except for Black families who were often broken up and sold to different slavers. Or maybe because you didn't have to hunt the malls for teens, you could just go buy what you wanted. Or maybe even because the Age of Consent was 10?

Lilac Fire roared past us yesterday. The wind direction saved us and it went West. It was one canyon over. Fortunately, no wind today but now we can smell it when we go outside. Yesterday and last night the wind was so strong we could watch the flames but not smell it!

The saddest thing about the fire: It burned San Luis Ray Downs that had something like 450 race horses in residence. At least 20 did not get out alive. One guy described trying to get his filly out of her stall, but she was too afraid to come out. He had to watch while she burned alive. The hands had to let lots of horses out of their corrals and stalls to run free. I guess they have most of them rounded up and in stalls at Del Mar Racetrack now.

Nobody died, but some people were hurt. One firefighter got hit by an exploding propane tank. It dislocated his shoulder but he popped it back in and went back to work! A REAL man...

I saw the footage of the bear yesterday.
It took a lot out of me.

In the meantime, do either of these entries stir any interest out there in Ranter Land?

Apparently, Google's AI has spent all of four hours to become the chess champion of the world. Past chess playing AIs were given all the best moves. DeepMind was given the basic moves and then it figured out everything else by itself by playing millions of games. After four hours of compute time it is astonishing grandmasters with its attacks. They have never seen anything like it.

Entire human chess knowledge learned and surpassed by DeepMind's AlphaZero in four hours

I think AIs playing humans is over now. It's just going to be two completely leagues: Human playing human, and AI playing AI.

At this point would/could it be any worse than our current crop of humans mucking up the works? I am being only partly facetious here.

Look at our current political system. Look at the global mess mostly attributed to too many people fighting over scarce resources while continuing to attempt to prove themselves “right”. Then throw in the religions, tribalism, monied interests, political and military pals and you have yourself a fine stew indeed.

This, or something akin to it, is indeed coming. The only remaining question is: “In what form?”

What if it's primary goal was fairness. Like a division of all resources evenly among all humans. For most of the human race it could be a very lovely "overlord" indeed. Not so much for the 1%.

It was given the basic chess moves and then explored all moves possible within that "space". You could do the same with rules for behavior in managing the world. It never questioned the basic rules and there is no reason it would. You start with Asimov's Three Rules and go from there.

The simple fact is that there are MANY systems in the world that are too complex for human intelligence. If we can invent a tool that makes those systems work better then we would be fools not use it.

Feed it ten thousand years of world history, then turn it loose on all the right wing political forums, then move on to all the right wing think tanks, then feed it the formula for human dignity and fairness.

Then turn it loose on the world as software.
It can only wind up going one of two ways:

Fairness

OR

Skynet

At this point, 50-50 is the best odds you're gonna get.

Feed it the basic premise that all humans are equal and all the racists are toast. It might have to get a little SkyNety to toast them but I think they wouldn't even notice. It IS the best chess player in the world. It would be 10 moves ahead of them.

Things would "just happen" to make it seem unfeasible to be a neo-nazi any more. Like your elderly mother being cared for by a nice Jewish lady. Just like everybody used to hate homosexuals until they found out some of their best friends and relatives were gay or lesbian.

Of course, there is almost no truth in that article at all. I'm a Liberal Pragmatist and I have plenty of Conservative friends. We feel sorry for Conservatives that they can be so deluded and abused by the people they vote for, but hate? Not really.

It's like when you see someone falling for a conman: You don't hate the victim. You hate the conman.

Isn’t it always and forever curious that God-and hence “God’s will"-is always the same will as those who claim ownership to the same given entity?

God’s Will always correspondes to My Will. All’s I can say is that line of thought gives me the Willies.

There may not be any way to force a recall. This is a federal election, not a state one. The Alabama law on recalls does not say a federal senate candidate can pay for a recall, only a bunch of state offices. So federal rules would apply and I think if the margin is not small, no recall allowed.

There's also another problem: The State Supreme Court just recently overturned a law that would require election officers to keep digital images around after the election. So some may have already been deleted. That means you could only recount some of the ballots, and they won't do that.

BTW, the last recount they had in Alabama found only a very few ballots difference. Like maybe three!

I think the only real complaint the Alabama GOP can have is that Black people voted, and they aren't supposed to do that in Alabama!

My wife is in Medi-Cal Hell: She made a mistake on the Covered California website reporting our income. She thought they wanted just wage income so she put in zero, though we do have considerable income from other sources. Covered California sent her to Medi-Cal (though we don't qualify) and Medi-Cal won't release her back to Covered California even though she has fixed the Covered California record and submitted a sworn statement we have too much income.

She has been trying for months to escape! She keeps on being referred to phone numbers that nobody answers or their answering system says a case worker will call you back and they never do. I've seen quite a few of comments to this effect from other people trapped like this. One case worker told her she doesn't have the authority to release her but offered her Medi-Cal, which I believe is felony welfare fraud!

I think we need the state Attorney General to investigate.

Ron Thomas on Facebook

Ron Thomas is with Phil Hoskins.
November 30 at 9:04am ·
It is with overwhelming sadness that I announce the passing of Phil Hoskins, my husband of nearly 22 years, who left us exactly one week ago, shortly before 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

I have spent this past week in shock and sadness, but most importantly, working with a core group of friends preparing an amazing celebration-weekend of his life, appropriately entitled “PhilFest.”

On Saturday 12/16 we will hold a traditional memorial featuring testimonials and tributes from family and friends, as well as a photo collage, video and live vocal tribute honoring Phil’s unique and diverse life. Saturday’s memorial will be immediately followed by a catered reception.

“PhilFest” continues on 12/17, Sunday afternoon, with an uplifting celebration (after all, he told me he ultimately wanted a big party 😊). Sunday will feature hors d'oeuvres, dancing, tributes, legendary DJ Chris Cox of Thunderpuss fame, and performances honoring some of Phil’s favorite music.

I will be setting up an event page shortly with invites for each event, and please let me know if you want to join us for one or both of these celebrations.

In loving memory of Phil,

Ron Thomas

Wow. I had observed that Phil had not been “around” here much recently. I can’t have claimed to have ever known him nor had much interaction with him on this site over the years.

A few PM’s from time to time.

Nevertheless this news indeed serves to deliver a great sadness at the finiteness of everything. And how transitory everything is, no matter how permanent it might seem at the time. I “lost” my wife of 41 years in March of 2016. That sadness and loss is still haunts me. And I feel that loss for Phil. An internet friend-- but a friend never the less.

“Funny” how that works.

I'm going to the Sunday Philfest Day 2...could not get out there today for the memorial, had to deal with contractors.
I'll try to do my best to represent the Ranters.

Thank you Jeff. I tried to get a visit in, but failed, to my eternal regret. Phil was, for me, a mentor and friend from the time I took up the challenge of being a Moderator. He was a fellow lawyer, so we had a bond over the honorable practice of the profession, and a similar outlook on what was most important. Although we never met in person, he was, for me, an inspiration and a model of decorum. I'll miss him terribly.

I was a moderator with Phil a while back here. He intimidated me a bit but he also steadied me. I liked him so much. He taught me so much.
Trouble in my own life right now....almost lost my husband, an illness to last for a while....
The cloud of losing Phil hurts.

If any can get word to Ron from me, please tell him....I am so very sorry.

ps I must mention his "colorful" and "out of the box" lifestyle suits me and where I live to a t. Always and forever. Do what you love. Be what you are.
PHIL I will miss you!!!

I am still trying to process it all.
I really liked Phil, nay...loved the guy but I never did get the chance to meet him in person.
We were going to take him and his partner to dinner about six months ago but he begged off because he said he wasn't feeling real good that night.
But I thoroughly enjoyed his wit and personality, and he was the stabilizing influence at the Rant for many years.
Losing Phil is just the latest in a string of tragic losses which have affected this forum in the last few years. Phil was one of the core figures who knew the ins and outs of how the system ran, so he knew how to fix forum issues as well as how to lead people.

The Philfest was low key...many of his close friends, none of whom I knew.
But I did get to pay my respects to Ron his husband and see the many delightful photos, most of which Phil shared here with us at the Rant.

So I'm sure you heard about the special election in Virginia where a Democrat won by one vote - except a judge went home and thought about one particular ballot that had the Republican name circled and a line under the Dems name and they checked the Records of this person's voting record and saw that this person always voted for a Republican - so the results are now a tie again and the two race will be decided by a lottery.

Originally that ballot was discarded as over voting.

I thought no one knew how you voted. Hmm

Total BS: We have secret ballots in this country. They never record how you voted and your name is not on the ballot once it goes into the ballot box. If somebody official made this statement, then they are trying to diddle to vote and are doing a provably fraudulent job of it.

I bet this ballot gets tossed. Back in Florida Gore vrs Bush they decided election officials shouldn't try to guess a voter's intent. I'm sure this is not the only spoiled ballot. There are probably dozens or hundreds more.

That's what I thought. Hmm

A One-Vote Victory in Virginia Lasts One Day as Judges Declare a Tie

The judges meeting in Newport News, Va., agreed to a Republican request to count a problematic ballot discarded the day before, said Philip L. Hatchett, a lawyer for David Yancey, the Republican incumbent who seemed to have lost his seat to Shelly Simonds, a Democrat. A victory by Ms. Simonds, a school board member in Newport News, would evenly split the Virginia House 50-50 and end 17 years of Republican majorities.

NY Times

It was reported on KOMO AM news on the drive home this afternoon that the judges looked at the voting history of this person's ballot. KOMO is a Sinclair Broadcasting ABC affiliate.

I'm not sure if a local reporter reported the story, or if it was a network reporter. Hmm

EDIT: The NYT has the actual ballot. I'm guessing that because the person voted all Republican, they meant to vote for a Republican in that box - is the thinking. But, still, no one can be certain.

Another recount is a possibility. The reasoning of the three judge panel is pretty sketchy, frankly, but it is the process in Virginia. It could still be alright if the Dem wins the coin toss... Then they'll think of something else. Power does not surrender itself willingly. "...judges are elected by a majority vote of the Virginia General Assembly (the combined house of delegates and senate). Supreme court justices serve for twelve years while appeals and circuit judges serve for eight years." Election of judges in Virginia. Republican have controlled the election of judges there for 17 years. Think there might be some bias on the bench? It worked for the Supreme Court...

Wanna bet if the Republican loses the coin toss, they "find" a few more ballots stuck behind the ballot scanners?

Not a Kushner was resting, not even his spouse;
The documents were hung by the shredder with care,
In fears that Bob Mueller soon would be there;

The staffers were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of subpoenas danced in their heads;
And Melania in her babushka, and Trump in his cap,
Flew to Mar-a-Lago for a long winter’s nap,

When on the TV there remained such a matter,
There was Brennan, Podesta and man named Jim Clapper.
With bribes fresh in hand, they flew like the flash,
The greedy corporations did suck up the cash.

The Congress rejoiced the records will show
Feigned promises of riches to the peasants below,
When, what to amazement FoxNews should appear,
Took aim at Bob Mueller, with permission to smear,

I was on a definite academic track through high school, but I loved the mountains and Forest Service guard stations and old Jeeps more than anything. After a very brief experience with the Naval Academy, followed by several years as a university engineering major (I loathed the idea of sitting in an office "engineering" things), I came to the realization that I only wanted to make and fix things. I'm still making and fixing things, an occupation that I regard as both a calling and a duty.

Treasury Secretary Munchkin got a "box of manure" delivered to his doorstep and the Regressives seem to be all in a snit over it.

But it is a metaphor that can either be a gift or an insult, dependent only upon one's mindset. If a box of horseshit appeared on our doorstep we would happily combine it with wood chips and biochar and food waste to make compost for the garden. The growth that would result would be beneficial to the environment and provide us with tasty sustenance.

What do you bet that Munchkin took it as an insult and will send it to the landfill, where it will become global warming causing methane?

Puritanism reigns. I think the teacher is due some back pay and an apology. The postcards were school property.

I was instantly drawn toward audio and video.
As an autistic kid (Asperger's Syndrome) I was gifted with a brain that acted like a recording machine, so music and video were like a drug to me, I couldn't get enough of them.
I thought originally that I loved electronics but I came to realize that I only loved electronics because they were the vehicle that got me closer to my true loves, images and sound.
