Starting Jan. 1, anyone 21 and older will be able to legally buy marijuana in California with just an ID.

However, only shops with both local permits and state licenses to sell recreational cannabis will be able to open their doors to customers who don’t have doctor’s recommendations for medical marijuana.

The Bureau of Cannabis Control on Dec. 14 started issuing temporary licenses for recreational marijuana sales. Here’s a map of every shop that’s so far sanctioned to sell cannabis to adults on New Year’s Day. The map will be updated frequently, with new state licenses issued each day.

I'm sure that every legal medical marijuana dispensary has filed the paperwork to add recreational sales. It is potentially a much larger market. It is interesting that there are some differences between medical marijuana users and recreational users. For example, recreational users can grow up to 6 mature plants but MM users (who are also recreational) can grow as much as they need. MM growers can keep all the weed they grow in a locked cabinet in the home. Recreational growers are restricted to one pound.

Also, every county and incorporated area can limit everything except growing and possessing it in your own home and transporting under an ounce. The upshot: It's probably too confusing for police. I think they are just concentrating on large unlicensed growers and unlicensed sales now. In fact it has been legal for recreational users to grow, possess, smoke, and give away weed since 2016.

There has actually been an unlicensed dispensary in my town for months and the police have not bothered with it.

At this point, with Republicans in power, the entire notion of "medical users" is now poisoned because medical users are now regarded as second class citizens.
Laws are already on the books OR IN process to deny medical users the following rights:

own firearms
drivers license
professional licenses or certifications
adequate credit
witness credibility in tort

There's even more but that's the general list of the top five.
Several states have already issued prohibitions against firearm ownership by medical marijuana users right now, and several more are debating the withholding of professional licenses.

So screw it, no more of this medical users nonsense, it just needs to be legalized in all fifty states so that the Federal Government winds up being completely alone in the argument.
This is what happens when you try to compromise with people like Trump and his supporters.

Not going to work too well in states with Recreational Use, like California! Considering anybody 21 or older can be a Recreational User (as of 2016) with no state tracking or registration at all.

For that matter, you can be a medical user with just a letter from a doctor. No state registration required.

But that was my point. California is going to short circuit attempts to chisel away at the rights of MJ users, by legalizing it completely.
States that stay with the "medical user" laws will continue to chip away at patient rights. And the Republican powered DOJ is only too happy to help them.

Ya well- aside from being hijacked from Apple environs I have this to offer: Medical Marijuana in Oregon is a thing from the past. It’s all about recreational. IMO that was to be expected-- but it is surprising how quickly that happened.

That will happen “down south” for you Californianians I shall imagine:

Quote:
Elkington’s little green pot shop at 3675 Franklin Blvd. draws about three medical marijuana customers a day. Another 15 to 20 potential customers come in asking for recreational pot, but he can’t sell to them — yet.

The rapid growth and evolution of the marijuana marketplace in Oregon is prompting Elkington to apply with the Oregon Liquor Control Commission to become a recreational pot shop. He plans to let his status as a medical pot dispensary with the Oregon Health Authority lapse in March.

“It’s a financial decision,” Elkington said.
He’s not alone in going recreational.

Sounds like a great business opportunity for somebody. Come in and snap up the business at foreclosure prices and then do a major rebranding campaign with lots of Black and Asian faces in the ads. Change your charity donations, and if the employees are all White, for God's Sakes hire some people of color. The right owner could turn this around within a few months.
