To a certain extent, Justice, as any other activity of government, has a political (or at least policy) component. Attorneys General have agendas - or emphases - that pervade the Department. They might, for example, emphasize organized crime, white collar crime, or gang violence. They might emphasize hate crimes or focus on voting rights. This, however, is more nuance or flavor than politics.

The current Attorney General, however, has taken a sledgehammer to the concept of independence. I give him credit for recusing himself from the Russia inquiry, but... even there, he involved himself in the firing of FBI Director Comey. But it is not so much the Attorney General but the Tyro-in-Chief who doesn't understand the concept of independence (or many other legal concepts, frankly). Nor does Congress. Today Senators Grassley and Graham perverted the process again by seeking an investigation from Justice over the Steele dossier. Similarly, other congresscritters have sought to use their influence to reopen or open the inquiry regarding Hillary Clinton - beyond the millions of dollars already wasted on their own.

This is a very disturbing issue, and threatens the entire legal system.

As I was finalizing this, new issues have come up: Clinton Foundation investigated by Justice Department

Hopefully, the actual professionals at Justice will see these for what they are and not bother with doing much on them. They have already spent millions of dollars and countless hours on them and concluded that there is no there there. All they can do now is damage their CVs, by spending a lot of time doing something stupid.

I would not waste time on minor weed cases if I was one of the Federal Prosecutors, either. Same logic. You either will not get convictions or they will be dismissed when weed goes legal in a few years. Not a good career move.

Using the Justice Department to Investigate Trump's Enemies - The Atlantic. I, too, hope that the professionals take charge and keep from wasting resources on this, but they're not in control at the top. This is unseemly and very Banana-Republican.

Quote:
The reported movement related to the Clinton Foundation re-opens an investigation closed in 2016 by career Justice Department staff, who deemed there was not enough to go forward. But suggestions of corrupt dealing involving the foundation and the Clinton-headed Obama State Department have been a staple of conservative media for years. On Thursday, The Daily Beast reported that DOJ was also reconsidering the investigation into Clinton’s use of a private email server and address, which was closed without charges in summer of 2016, then reopened and quickly shut just before the election—potentially costing Clinton the presidential election, according to some analyses. It’s unclear whether there is any new evidence involved in either direction.
The same is true of the referral by Grassley and Graham of Christopher Steele - indeed
Quote:
What is curious, as the Times points out, is that while the Grassley/Graham letter is vague, it appears to call attention not to allegedly false comments that Steele made to congressional investigators, but to the FBI itself. If Steele lied to the FBI, one would expect the FBI to know, and to pursue charges.
Political theater, anyone? But even if theater, this is very disturbing theater. I'm really surprised that Graham (not Grassley) would lend his name to such a Banana-Republican effort.
