People would certainly die. Reminds me of the Monty Python sketch where the abattoir designer was trying to pitch his design for public housing: "The tenants arrive here and are carried along the corridor on a conveyor belt in extreme comfort, past murals depicting Mediterranean scenes, towards the rotating knives."

Those who die would be those who would not be exactly bright, are overly greedy, have an ego waaaay too big to let common sense interfere, or, basically, dumb as a stump. Perhaps they fall under the proviso that there are some that should be removed from the gene pool so that those who are not walking stumps survive? I am basing this on the simple fact that they would have to, using their free will, leave their bleacher seats and make the decision to joint them other brave idiots on the field of battle (I have no doubt about field of battle thing).

In a bygone era we used to have something called the draft. This did is a couple of things. First the nation got to know its constituent parts whilst serving together. The second thing is that you learned that there was always somebody tougher and always somebody that was smarter. These are things we no longer have and that lack, I believe, has allowed others to turn us against each other and for many to move to the stupid side. Just saying..........

In other words the game of Mahem might actually serve the betterment of the human race.

Actually, being in a trench may not select for intelligence. All you have to do is remember to keep your head down. It may in fact select for cowardice! All the brave, idealistic folks go over the top and charge the machine guns. I think the ones who survive are cynics.

Universal national service is a horrible, socialist, statist notion that needs to be squashed before it is even brought up as a national topic of discussion.

Universal national service would result in eliminating the need to pay rank and file members of the armed services living wages with the opportunity to gain life-long health care. Replacing these professional soldiers, who will do what they are ordered to do, with 14-month wonders will reduce military effectiveness.

Those (the majority?) who do not want to serve the forces of war, could be set to care for the elderly, the poor, the homeless, the national parks and forests, denying private industry of the right to compete for providing those services.

All that on top of the fact that it is disgusting to expect a Real American to go along with the notion that they are required to give 14 months of their life to the federal government, of all things!

No.
You load the ball with $250 million in diamonds, put Donald Trump out there, let him start working on it, then five minutes later let all the poors take the field. The match lasts twenty minutes.

I believe this is called "creative problem solving" and it solves multiple problems at once.

Good idea! Yet another way to solve a problem whilst playing a game! Given greed, however, I think you could get the same thing with considerably less, especially for Trump who I am convinced was broke when he got elected and, its said, all his businesses are currently also losing money.
