I've made no bones about my view that Trump's Cabinet picks are historically bad. Worst Case Scenario. But the events of this week portend a descent from that nadir of optimism. Our nation is about to go completely off the rails.

Let's start here: Trump fires Tillerson, taps Pompeo as next secretary of state - CNN. Now, Tillerson was an absolutely terrible, no good, very bad choice for Secretary of State and has done an abysmal job of running that Department into the ground. It is a shambles. But... what a time to change horses! A week after Trump impetuously agrees to a meeting with North Korea he changes the head of the Department expected to provide expertise for that meeting.

It's no surprise that Pompeo is his nominee. He'll be easily confirmed, and wanted the job from the beginning, but ... really? Do you suppose the timing might be related to this? Russia probe: House intel Republicans end investigation, find 'no evidence' of collusion - USA Today. Pompeo, as head of CIA, had been forced to provide evidence to the Committee that it completely ignored.

So, who will be in charge of the CIA? Gina Haspel. Oh, yay! A female, career CIA agent. Oh, but wait! Where have I heard that name before? Oh yeah, she was in charge of that black site where those Al Qaeda prisoners were tortured, and was also the one who ordered the tapes and records destroyed before the investigation could be completed. What a great pick! No controversy there!

Meanwhile, Gary Cohen, the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad pick for Chief Economic Advisor, quit. Cohen is a doctrinaire give-to-the-rich-its-good-for-the-economy who was the chief cheerleader for the untax-the-rich law passed by Congress that is going to destroy the economy. Indeed, he was so devout in his beliefs, that he stuck around after the Charlottesville nazis-are-honorable-people-too debacle. Great guy, that Cohen. So, how could it possibly be worse? Peter Navarro.

Navarro is "the ascendant, unapologetically protectionist trade adviser to President Donald Trump".
Quote:
Cohn and many other senior officials have warned internally that if Navarro—widely credited for being a top cheerleader to Trump’s desired crackdown on foreign steel and aluminum imports—were Cohn’s successor, it would be an unmitigated disaster and nudge the world closer to the brink of economic havoc.
Good choice, no?

No.

Depressing. I fear the damage of this administration will be irreversible.

And the his just keep on coming: Longtime Trump aide fired over financial crime investigation - CNN. Now, he's a minor functionary, I admit, albeit one with exposure to classified information, but why this fits this thread:

Quote:
President Donald Trump's longtime personal aide John McEntee was fired because he is currently under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security for serious financial crimes, a source familiar with his firing told CNN.
So, where does a disgraced former aide go with criminal charges looming?
Quote:
Trump reelection campaign manager Brad Parscale announced McEntee's hire alongside that of Katrina Pierson, a Trump campaign spokesperson in 2016 who will join the 2020 campaign as a senior adviser.

As they say, "a natural fit."

Interesting thing: Tillerson actually IS a successful businessman, unlike Trump. I don't think he ever stiffed contractors, cheated people, went bankrupt multiple times, etc. Not a guy who should be Secretary of State, but he would have been good in some Trade or Economics position. He would have been a reasonable President, even, for the Chamber of Commerce Republicans.

I expect that by next week - maybe tomorrow, if the PA 18th goes for the dems - Trump will announce that John Bolton is replacing H.R McMaster as NSA. Expect that it will be used to distract from whatever bad news dogs Trump that day. David Shulkin will be replaced at VA, and Trump will emphasize that he was an OBAMA holdover! Betting money has Rick Perry taking over, since Trump is having a hard time getting qualified candidates to volunteer.

Shulkin - Acceptance of nomination and confirmation by Senate could mean political suicide. I suspect the job is too daunting for any but the most fearless and dedicated of bureaucratic warriors to undertake, and no one Mr Trump knows or considers is that person.

Why would anybody want to volunteer to commit career suicide by joining the Trump Administration at this point? As soon as you do something reasonable in your new job he fires you. Does anybody think working for Trump (briefly) is going to look good on their resume?

I don't know if mendacity is just the norm in this administration, or if it is a requirement: ICE Spokesman Quits Over Leaders' Use Of 'Misleading Facts' To Discuss Calif. Arrests. Trump, Sessions and DHS Acting Director Homan all deliberately lied to smear the Oakland Mayor, and it wasn't an "exaggeration", it was a blatant, knowing falsehood. The other thing they all have in common? They're unrepentant racists, for every meaning of the word.
