Madeline Albright, former Secretary of State, famously described the United States as "the indispensable nation" in world affairs. (The phrase was actually coined by Sidney Blumenthal and James Chace.) Since then, the concept has been abused by many people, none more so than... Donald Trump, who seems bent on making the United States irrelevant to the world. That, of course, is perfectly aligned with Vladimir Putin's goal.

I inadvertantly posted before adding citations. Here are some of those that I can remember/recover:
11 countries sign TPP trade pact without the United States. When you're not at the table, you don't get a share. Britain can stand up to Russia, but it will need its allies' help. It's supposed to be mutual support, but with Trump at the helm, Britain can't count on the United States. The United States is not part of the EU. Pretty soon, it may not be part of NATO.
