Serious question: What just happened? Hmm

Did N/S Korea just end their hostilities and agree to unite the Korean Peninsula?

Did Moon steal Fatass' thunder and do this before Trump had a chance?

An inquiring mind wants to know! laugh

Absolutely.
There is no other explanation. And, there's no other way it would work, either. Donald Trump has sent Kim Jong Un straight into the arms of the South Korean president, with the idea that ANY plan for peace would be better than a plan hatched with the blessing of Trump.
I WILL give Trump CREDIT for the fact that his crazy out-crazied Kim, but it stops right there. This agreement is not under any terms approved of by the Trump administration.
North and South Korea have united under common ground against a common foe...Donald J. Trump and Trump's America.

Watch this space for input from China.

So is this a West Germany/East Germany redux, but on the Korean peninsula? Hmm

That's kind of a spooky thought but probably true.

I haven't dug into this but I don't think that is what happened.

I think today they agreed to a peace treaty which in no way means anything other than the war is over.

I also suspect Moon and Kim both have interests in unification. Spitballing --> Kim may want some kind of agreement which includes him as leader of some autonomous region but would want monies from the South to assuage the plight of the people in the North. Further Kim (and Xi) want the US to leave the peninsula. There may be some kind of trade off on a nuclearized North if Kim signs NPT (after he already has nukes). It is not clear to me anything the Koreas do has American interests in mind.

North Korea has made many similar overtures in the past. There are always many side conditions that amount to "South Korea Surrenders". Don't hold your breath waiting for unification. They may sign a Peace Treaty just to formalize the effective peace they have had for 75 years. North Korea has an awful lot of economic catch-up to do before the two are anywhere near parity. Expect another 75 years or so.

Couldn't the same thing be said about EGermany in 1988? Hmm

you are assuming Kim would tolerate a democratic election, which would abrogate the economic disparity as an issue

No. People are starving to death in North Korea, and not just enemies of the state. They have spent all their money on their military in some insane death cult moves. They need to stop that. Nobody is going to invade them, basically because the place is a pathetic Third World pesthole.

They need to run their country like 1950s Japan for a while. Build up agriculture, then industry, information age, just go through the steps the rest of the world has since 1953. If they would do that for about 20 years, they might be ready for unification. Without that it would be too much of a shock to both North and South Koreans.

But THEN a unified Korea would be a powerhouse. Imagine South Korea's industrial capacity combined with full nuclear arms club membership. They might actually eclipse Russia eventually, and would certainly be on par with France or the UK.

Kim Jong Un needs to ease the economic sanctions. Unification is out of the question but a formal peace treaty is likely somewhere in the near future. Even Kim must realize that his people are starving.

Based on the public statements of Bolton, Sec Pompeo, and Mr Trump, none of them understand what Kim wants, in my tainted opinion. I believe it is nonsensical to think Kim would after putting his country through the most severe regimen possible to acquire nuclear weapons simply give them up because Mr Trump is a bully.

This is very similar to the Iran deal. Conservatives hate the deal because they thought the only deal was for Iran to surrender to Israel. These folks are delusional.

Fatass has kind of made himself irrelevant. The Korea's don't need him or his belligerent foriegn policy to sign a peace treaty and open trade between the North and South. China will quickly follow suit and the US will be left looking like a third wheel.

Just like Iran does not need the US to remain in the nuke deal: They have all their money back that we were holding, and they can buy anything they like from the rest of the world who WILL stay in the deal. Trump has no bargaining position. As far as Iran is concerned he can go pound sand. Nobody else is going to join Trump in reinstating sanctions, not only because Iran has met all their obligations but also just to throw it in Trump's face.

I suspect he has figured that out, so that's why he blustering about going to war with them.

AND BOLTON IS ALREADY 1-0, because he helped steer us into war with Iraq. Now he wants to be two for zero, and Trump is even more of an empty vessel than George Dubya Bush was.

What the north wants is very simple. They want to be a recognized nuclear power. If you listen closely to the talk, its all about getting rid of the north's nuclear PLAN. This is not the same as getting rid of their bombs and missiles. It will be interesting to see what the Jackass does. I suspect he will buy it, and recognize North Korea as a nuclear power. Then, again, they might go the Israeli way and just let them keep their bombs and missiles if they will just shut up about it.

Time, of course, will tell..................
