May is the month of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. May is also a verb which expresses "possibility", as in, "it may be." Coincidence? I think not.

I had a great-great Aunt May. She had a large wardrobe that was inherited from her parents. In it we found a treasure-trove of family heirlooms, including what had always been described as "the Gold Rush letters" - what we had always thought was apocryphal correspondence between my great-great-great-great grandfather and his wife when he adventured West in search of treasure during the 1850 Gold Rush to California. Instead, they became a touchstone for my family's quest for our roots.

From the reading of those letters, a family project germinated. My siblings and I have embarked upon a visceral adventure to retrace the course of the trail embarked upon to rediscover our family roots. It is an illuminating adventure, full of twists, turns, surprises and truths. It was a similar quest of discovery that led Alex Haley to trace the origins of his family lore and that resulted in his seminal novel, . (The most recent iteration of a film adaptation of that novel was launched by the History Channel on Memorial Day - which also occurs in May.)

"Roots" form an apt metaphor for many of our human experiences and endeavors. The first questing root of a plant is called a "radicle". Like our forebears who took the radical step to leave their homes as pioneers and explorers, the radicle seeks to establish a path for nutrients and stability for the growth and propagation of its family. In 1880 Charles Darwin published a book about plants he had studied, The Power of Movement in Plants. The metaphorical possibilities inherent in that title are legion. One such metaphor was the inspiration for the band, "The Roots", the collaborations of Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter. Ironically, their breakthrough album was Things Fall Apart, a title that came from a novel written by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. . In many ways Chinua Achebe's novel is the mirror image of Alex Haley's, exploring the impact of colonizing Europeans on Africa, rather than the experience of Africans in colonial America. [Spoiler: whether the stone hits the pitcher, or the pitcher hits the stone, it's going to be bad for the pitcher.]

Welcome to the Round Table for May 2018.

I invite you to explore your "May Be"s. May your Spring prove fruitful.

I wonder why students continue to let prom be a school-controlled event? Lots of seniors are 18, so they could sell tickets, rent venues, hire bands, provide their own security, etc. Then they could tell school administrators they are not welcome. I keep reading about heavy-handed behavior on the part of school administrators. Why not make it a private non-school event?

Nazis should all be hiding in basements like in the good old days. Or committing suicide in bunkers like their hero.

Latest evidence of "Trump Worship Syndrome": Orin Hatch says McCain's statement that Trump is not allowed at his funeral is ridiculous. Trump is the guy who claimed McCain was not a war hero because he was captured and tortured for years by North Vietnam. Hatch backed off today, but imagine the gall to comment on somebody else's funeral guest list!

Trump loyalty over Party, Country, and now even Common Decency. Orin needs to retire.

Tough beans Hatch...a dying man gets to choose who comes to their funeral. You do NOT, and you have neither the right nor the invitation to comment on it.

If you didn't receive Michael Cohen's Memo about MAGA being replaced by "Pay to Play" - you're probably not rich enough.

Merck Sharp & Dohme has a 100% effective Ebola vaccine! They did a real clinical trial in Guinea with over 11,000 people living around Ebola patients and not a single vaccinated patient got it. After early findings they opened the trial up and gave it to the control group, too. Clinical trials are very rarely 100% effective.

Science marches on.

Holy cr@p! Big story about Trump Junior visiting the Gulf State Arabs before the election to talk about money and social media manipulation with bots. EVERYBODY is going to prison for one thing or another. With all of these slam-dunk convictions Mueller has his choice of criminals to flip.

Also it looks like the Qatar money folks who wanted to go through Bannon had to find a new channel after he got fired. That's when they approached Kushner. Then the Steele dossier came out and they got scared so they backed out. Trump went all "TERRORISTS!" on them and the other Arabs blockaded them. Then they decided to accept the shakedown invest in Kushner's building and now Trump is all "Qatar is our buddy" again. Talk about blatant bribery.

I think that's almost the last shoe dropping. Apparently everything in the Steele dossier beside the pee party has been corroborated now. And the pee party is just in there for comic relief. rolleyes
