NWP's 9.9% post livened up the mental fermentation process in my head, resulting in a minor morning epiphany - how socialism, classism, and capitalism are elbowing for dominance in the mythical American Dream.

In that half awake state, where Truth dangles enticingly and one's intellectual machine fears that coming fully to worldly sensibility is going to wash out the revelations of Dreamland, I seized on the word "coast" to summarize the magical thought.

The American Dream is to achieve a comfortable life of coasting without care. Perhaps it is the Human Dream. The Devil in the Details is where the level of security and lavishness is set for ones desired coasting context.

Coasting is the root appeal of having lots of money. Money to pay for the house and cars, for healthcare, for good food and drink, for entertainment, for toys. But how much money is enough? When can the pursuit of more money abate and the coasting begin?

Coasting is the root appeal for socialism, as well. In an ideal world, we would respect and take care of one another, share toys, share healthcare, share security, share the good food and drink. As a society, we have dipped a toe in the world of socialism, enough to provide a bare minimum of support for most of our citizens. Depending upon one's class, that support can be generous (even "private" retirement plans are largely socialist in structure), or just enough to get by on.

I think the salvation for life on Earth is to be found in an awakening to the benefits of sane coasting. Dialing back the nearly universal human desire to have enough (more than enough) to be lazy is the key. Disposing of the fear-driven competition to have "enough" to coast without care should be the objective for humanity. Having money should not be the basis for security and a pleasant life.

The human race is not likely to "become lazy" in a general sense, even as some segments learn to love it. That segment would self regulate by a variety of factors but the overwhelming majority would continue to seek to satisfy their curiosity of the unknown. That is why we support explorers, that is why we support the drive for higher technology, that is why we express ourselves in artistic media, and that is why we seek a longer life span.

Human beings are social creatures, and we're not likely to transform into an "egg-laying" sub-species that plants its young and leaves, or dies.

If the majority of the race find that they "have enough", then their pursuits will more often than not turn to expanding their consciousness and seeking a means to achieve more.

Not saying that all will seek to do so by ethical means, this is why mankind has a means of governance.
