I had a nomination to the Coast Guard Academy from my Congressman back in the early 70's.

Didn't go...

Wow, free college AND a commission in a service where you are unlikely to get killed. I guess you had something way better to do?

Yep, that's a good one too. Nice you had options.

Didn't like it, though, so I resigned. Wrong culture for me.

3000 coast guardsmen served in Vietnam and 3 were killed in action, for the record. I knew one of them (served, not killed). Coast Guard squadron one.

Okay, a few get killed. Not very many at all. Mostly you work stopping drug smugglers off the three coasts. The only people who risk their lives everyday are the rescue swimmers, like my step-niece.

Imagine jumping out of a helicopter to save crew members of sinking ships in a hurricane! That's almost as bad as my cousin, tail gunner hanging below helicopters in Vietnam. He has a electric nerve stim box for all the shrapnel chronic pain. I hope he has his medical marijuana card.

Just a matter of correcting the record.

The Coast Guard is fine, but I think I would have gone for Air Force electronics tech if my lottery number had not been so high. I had enough occupational electronics in high school plus some college by the time my lottery year came up. Considering my ACT scores, I'm pretty sure they would have taken me.

Seems that the take on the Coast Guard are diverse. A few facts:
The Coast Guard, pretty much lives on the stuff the other services no long want (they did, however, get a couple of new ice breakers (they had 1 and it was about 60 years old) but then somebody noticed that Russia was claiming EVERYTHING under the ice <G>)
The men who fly for the Coast Guard are, for the most part, from other services. Every one I have spoken to said that flying for the Coast Guard is more exciting and rewarding. Those guys fly when every other airplane has been grounded. I used to fly with them and it was, always, more exciting than I would have preferred <G>
The Coast Guard was saddled with the drug warrior thing and I have known many who were against that and remain so to this day (rightfully so, I think). They figured they had enough important stuff to do.

I should also mention that they also sail when all other ships have hidden away in port. In other words the Coast Guard has a bunch of damned heroes who do stuff nobody else does from them little surf boats, that can beat the crap out of you unless you know what you are doing, to donated helicopters, donated by other services, so they have equipment to rescue them that need it. I guess I should also mention that they were in Vietnam before that war even started and, as usual, risked all to do their jobs.

Just saying ......................
