I just learned that, in 2013, the Democrats used the Nuclear option (senate only needs a majority - no more filibusters) because the Republicans were dragging their feet on a judge nominations. At the time some thought this might not be a good idea.

Just thought I would mention this.

You're not hinting that Mitch McConnell might take this route are you?

The Republican party, for at least 40 years, has concertedly been pursuing anti-democratic goals - and succeeding - like crushing minority voices in Congress, in the courts, and at the ballot box. They are on the verge of complete victory. The only real solution is overwhelming victory - more than enough to swamp their efforts. It may, I am afraid, already be too late. Despite a groundswell of opposition, the controls of government have been jammed: agencies have been sabotaged, rules gutted, courts stacked, norms obliterated, and coffers emptied. If Kavanaugh is confirmed, the coup will be over, and SCOTUS will be in position to block any legislative fixes, even if the Democrats regain control of the other two branches by 2/3 majorities. It happened in the 1920-30s, and will happen again. This is existential. The United States has been betrayed from the inside.

Gregor;
This is the rationale that Mitch uses, ie. "its all the fault of the Democrats"

NWP
you are flat out right and Kavanaugh will get in. The Dems should never forget what happened. The Republicans took over the majority of state legislatures and they raped and burned. I remember, when it happened, that the Dems seemed to simply ignore what THEY had allowed. Because of that this is the result. Its kinda like women's rights. They slept for the last 10/20 years and finally woke up when is almost too late. Equal rights, for instance (I think) is a single state from getting done.

I seriously hope that the left can win! The trick is to not offend the middle, this is exactly what the Republicans did (they waited until they were in charge then had at it). They, for instance, continue to brag about their "Tax plan that reduced all taxes for everybody" and there are damn fools who buy it. I watched a show, the other day, when they were talking about the economy during the Obama administration. One of the talking heads said, and it made sense, the difference between how Obama talked about the economy, and the Republicans talk about it now, is that they sell the hell out of this economy, Obama - not so much. We gotta start tooting our own horn! (a lot!)

The Republicans have lost the popular vote every, single, election (except 2004) this century. Most Americans reject the GOP platform.

So what, Kavanough gets on the Court. (What McConnell did to Merrick Garland is outrageous and ought to take a hit for that behavior). Alito and Clarence Thomas are not going to live forever. Hmm

Dems knowing they will win the popular vote just need to focus on winning the electoral college. We'll use our own computer gurus and microtarget district voters like the Fatboy did in 2016.

We can do this!!! smile

The demographic trends in the US mean Republicans are fighting a losing game. They are on tip toes and the water is almost up to their nostrils now. With the Senate rules broken permanently, they can't play their resistance games when they are in the minority any more. They made a huge long term mistake when they got rid of the 60 vote rule for Supreme Court appointments. Within the next decade they will lose the Supreme Court forever.

They MIGHT get to replace Notorious RBG or she might piss them off by living well into her hundreds...the woman actually beat pancreatic cancer. That means she has the physical endurance of a tardigrade and the recalcitrance of Keith Richard.

Once we take back the House, it's the beginning of the end for their party, because they will not be able to hang onto the Senate that much longer either.

But, they just might hold on to SCOTUS for 20 or 30 years cry

Oh please....WTF is all this optimism? Voters are divided straight down the middle and while Trump has probably hurt his party more than helped it they will all go out and vote for the Rs come November.
As much as I'd like to join in with you guys celebrating Democratic victory two months before the election I'm just not feeling it.

NO NO NO NO NO It wasn't a mistake, it was a necessary rule change because Congress is unable to achieve a 60 vote majority on anything.

Conservatives are not going to go away just to make life convenient for us. Take a look at what just happened in Sweden. A veritable Democratic Socialist Utopia. One of the "happiest" nations in the world. Swinging suddenly to the hard right, or not so suddenly. Is it about immigration? Taxes? Nationalism? Doesn't matter. About half the people in any population are conservative by nature.
