WELCOME TO THE ROUNDTABLE FOR SEPTEMBER 2018
Greetings from Venice, California

Sorry for the missed deadline folks, too much real life swirling around the homestead so this will be very brief and yet functional.

I can't begin to say how much I appreciate this place, and the people, and I hope that there is a way to bring back a lot of our old friends and bring in new ones.

I'm going to leave it to you wonderful people to just start the thread or carry over what's already being discussed in the August RT.
I'll leave August open for a few days before locking it.

Time to feed the puppies again. I can see why breeders like to sell them at 8 weeks: They eat a LOT of food and they need it in 3 or 4 meals around the clock. Fortunately, they have learned not to bite and scratch your legs so much. I've got some impressive scars.

Puppies... yeah... hits a nerve 'cuz grandson, who is getting married next week has invested in a Newfoundland "puppy". His dad, who is a dog person, called me to let me know that Adam had lost his mind.

Unfamiliar as I am with dog breeds, I googled, to find out. So,here's a suggestion for a few minutes of entertainment. Google:

why not to buy a newfoundland dog
Not sure Adam's wife-to-be knows what she's getting in to. smile

I've got a 160 pound Shepard-Ridgeback cross male. Fortunately very short-haired and not a big drooler. So I know all about BIG dogs. You could throw a saddle on him and give pony rides.

These pups are from my 70 pound American Yellow Lab, the Newfie's neighbor. But this is not the big, slow, friendly English Lab. She's more high strung and as fast as the wind. She plays with the neighbor's Saluki and keeps up. Definitely a duck dog. At 6 weeks her pups jumped right in a little pool we made for them. They actually laid down in the water! I would post pictures but they look just like any other 8 week old Yellow Labs.

I hope that nephew does not live in Florida: Newfies tend to overheat easily.

My sister has a Newfie (her name is "Pinkie" LOL). They are WONDERFUL dogs, but LORD are they big. I've had 2 labs that, as you described, were more high-strung and smaller than other labs. They call them "trial" dogs, or "field" dogs, and they tend to be more energetic and smaller in stature - almost mid-size rather than large.

The American sporting version is practically a different breed from the English house pet version. I've had English labs before, but this is my first American. I looked for one purposefully when I bought her. In her litter I think we have one English throwback. He's 17 pounds when the other pups are 12, and just generally not as high strung. He lays down a lot! A good companion dog for an elderly person.

We have three females and they are all very social. When we sit in their area, they all come to sit with us and they like to be picked up. The males are all running around playing bitey games and tug-o-war. The personality difference between the sexes is amazing at only two months old.

Because God, apparently, loves irony. Why God Is Laughing at Brett Kavanaugh - Politico.
Quote:
Fairness is rooted in the idea of principles, precedent, proportionality. Few people in American life witnessed at closer range than Kavanaugh the modern reality that when things really matter—in the way that the balance of the Supreme Court matters—all these fine notions matter less than the cold, hard exercise of power.

So here was Kavaunagh—who spent his early thirties as a Ken Starr warrior pursuing Bill Clinton for the political and legal implications of his most intimate moral failings—now in his early fifties facing a political crisis over disturbingly vivid, passionately contested, decades-old allegations about Kavanaugh’s own possible moral failings.

The difference of course, being that Clinton's indiscretion was with a consenting adult and involved no attempted rape, statutory or otherwise. Nobody was forced to do anything, and nobody feared for their life. A big part of Clinton's legal trouble was because he thought it ungentlemanly to kiss and tell.

What is it with Republicans and their love for rapists and sexual harassers? Kinda seems like we all should have listened to Anita Hill.

Once again (is it too much to hope, for the last time) a panel of old white men is going to sweep the moral failings of one of their own under the rug for unseemly political expediency. The contrast is so stark.

If it weren't for his sanctimony, I could see a path to addressing an error of youth (I'm certain most of us have some boorish idiocy of our youth we'd as soon forget), but characters such as Kavanaugh are not much for self-reflection. So bad behavior is compounded by public collusion in covering for it.

The Kavaunagh fiasco, just weeks before the midterms, is another nail in the coffin for Republicans. They can't win either way: Confirmed or not.

Confirmed, they lose a lot of female voters who are getting sick and tired of their support for rapists and child molesters. Not confirmed, they probably lose the Supreme Court seat, and some of their Evangelical base.

Ya know what? It just occurred to me, Clarence Thomas isn't going to be there all that much longer. If we do our duty and get one or both houses in Congress, ain't no way he's being replaced by a Clarence Clone. The Rethugs are NOT going to hold the SCOTUS "for a lifetime".

Very good article interviewing the psychiatrist White House staff called to discuss Trump's mental deterioration:

Psychiatrist Says White House Officials Called Her With Concerns About Trump

She is very careful to explain the difference between diagnosis and evaluating dangerousness. She also has some interesting things to say about the American Psychological Association's expansion of the Goldwater Rule into a total gag rule.

Quote:
The increasing frequency in lying, the increasingly belligerent tweets, his inability to vary his responses to situations. For example, he cannot let a criticism go. He has to fabricate reality to situations that are distressing to him. And the thing about pathology, as opposed to normal reaction, is pathology actually becomes more rigid and more predictable. A healthy individual might be able to vary their response, especially if it’s strategy. They can choose to act differently if something is not working. Whereas pathology tends to become more and more rigid as it worsens. And what we’re seeing is simple repetition now, and worsening, greater frequency of his poor coping mechanisms.

Has anybody read Mrs. Ford's CV? Holy crap, she's a professor at Stanford, has written books and over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, and deeply respected by all of her peers and students.

Orin Hatch says: "She's mixed up." But she first talked about the attack in 2012 when she was in couple's counseling with her husband, and Brett Kavanaugh was a DC Circuit Court judge on the other side of the country. In addition, one of her high school classmates said that the incident was well known around their high school, back in 1980. I really doubt Kavanaugh would have told anybody, and she says she didn't at the time. So that means Kavanaugh's friend must have told somebody back when it happened. They could ask Justice Gorsuch about that: They went to High School together, but I don't know if Gorsuch ran with Kavanaugh's heavy drinker crowd.

I think he's toast. A losing deal for Republican's confirm him or not. And Orin Hatch needs to move into Assisted Living...

Nah. He's not toast at all. He will be pushed through come hell or high water. The republicans are masters manipulators, and also don't give a rats ass if it's ethical or not. He will be confirmed before November.

Sad to say, but I agree with you Kaine. The precedent, Associate Justice Clarence Thomas. His accuser was just as impressively credentialed as Mrs. Ford, and Anita Hill testified with an FBI background investigation.

Republicans are not going to make the same mistake they did with Anita Hill. Then there was an "investigation" (cursory as it was). Now they will avoid it like the plague. There are too many potential skeletons in Kavanaugh's Kloset. He was, clearly, a heavy drinker and Mark Judge can testify to too many drunken "incidents" to let him be subpoenaed or questioned. There is only one agenda item for Republican leaders - hell or high waters - confirm him. They may lose the Senate, but darned if they'll lose the courts. They've cheated too hard to let that happen.

Karma has a funny way of catching up with such schemes. They could confirm him, and then on January 2nd Clarence Thomas could have a heart attack and die. They would have sacrificed owning Congress just to lose everything.

Or on January 27th, or the 30th. Things haven't been too hunky dory in the Thomas household the last year or so.
She caught Hell for posting Holocaust pics in response to social media protests by the Parkland shooting kids.

Clarence Thomas' Wife Posts Memes Trashing Parkland Kids and Comparing Gun Control to Holocaust

And he's been in the limelight ever since Kavanaugh's accuser stepped forward, and he's not enjoying it at all.

Won't happen, the Democrats would need at least 66 seats to impeach a Supreme Court Justice and that does not allow for any Democratic Senators that do not vote for impeachment. If you think a Republican Senator would vote to impeach allhail

If the background check for a federal judge is anything like the one for certain classes of security clearances, then yes it very well could be known. But revealed to Senator McConnell? Hell for the really tough ones, they know how many Klingons you had when you were born.

I don't trust that Avenatti character very much. He seems to pull shite out of his hat which magically disappears as soon as he gets the headlines. he's a showboat with an eye on a presidential run...

But I hope he's got another witness.

On another note, The UN assembly has laughed at our president!
Donald Trump is addressing the United Nations in New York today, and opened his speech by bragging about his accomplishments.

Quote:
“In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country,” Trump said.

An awkward tittering followed.

“So true,” Trump said.

The entire U.N. erupted in laughter.

“Didn’t expect that reaction but that’s OK,” Trump said.

After an awkward pause, Trump went on to brag about the stock market and unemployment.

So what has Trump actually accomplished? He has divided the nation as it has not been divided since the civil war. A hero to racists misogynists, and bigots. He has made the rich much richer, at the expense of the poor. He has alienated our allies and embraced our enemies. Taken children from the arms of their mothers and locked them into cages. He has lied incessantly about everything imaginable.

Yes, perhaps he has done more than any other administration in our history. And none of it good.

His UN speech is just another example of his cluelessness: He has no idea what is appropriate to say to the UN, no appreciation of what the diplomats of other nations will find interesting or impressive, or even the fact that they are highly educated people who know exactly when he is lying. You don't go to the UN and brag about your so-called domestic accomplishments!

This was like him testifying under oath in a court. Such a disaster. A really bigly disaster, like no disaster of any President before Him.

Republicans are loving it though! Well known for their cluelessness and inappropriate behavior they revel in his crass behavior.

They are overjoyed when he sticks it to the man by behaving like a spoiled child. The very behavior we see in all of them.

Did any of you catch his impromptu press conference afterward?

"The consequences will extend long past my nomination."

Yeah, we know. That's why you can never sit in the SCOTUS.
That's why you were never supposed to sit in the SCOTUS.
That is why you must never be allowed to sit in the SCOTUS.

Dr. Ford is the worst possible witness for the GOP: She is a credible victim as well as an expert in the psychology of memory, trauma, PTSD, etc. They can't impeach her. Kav looks like a spoiled entitled rich brat throwing a tantrum next to her. If they confirm him anyway, they are doomed in November. When the Democratic House opens investigations that DO subpoena all witnesses of all events, etc. Kav is disgraced.

They should do him the favor of not confirming him now so he doesn't have to commit suicide later. He can just go back to being an appeals court judge. Confirming him destroys him.

People used to have more sense about skeletons in their closet, and keeping a low profile.

I'm seeing that Donald Trump's week at the UN is going no better than Brett Kavanaugh's hearing.

Republicans are certainly entertaining.

Well, that's the problem with being an idiot. You can convince other idiots that everything is hunky-dory, but eventually reality comes a-knocking. This is the time that competent con-men skip town.

It seems clear from what I have been able to watch so far that Mitchell, the prosecutor that Republicans brought in to act as fig leaf, believed Dr. Ford. That's when the GOP kangaroos decided they had to take over. She might have secured an indictment before the grand jury retired.
